We are taking a deep dive into leading remote and hybrid teams with Kevin Eikenberry, Chief Potential Officer of The Kevin Eikenberry Group. He has spent 30 years helping organisations and leaders from over 50 countries become more effective.
He has written numerous books, including Remarkable Leadership, From Bud to Boss, the Long-Distance Leader, The Long-Distance Teammate, and his newest, The Long-Distance Team. So, it’s unsurprising that we focused on the leadership skills required to effectively lead remote teams.
We honed in on the fact that despite what many so-called experts say, we don’t need a whole new set of leadership skills to lead remote teams. We also touched onful language: v some frequently used but unhelpirtual Teams. You may be leading a team that isn’t physically located, and unless it’s made up solely of robots and AI apps, it’s still a team of human beings!

I’m delighted to bring you this conversation with Jane Nickerson, the CEO of Swim England since April 2017. One of the most interesting parts of this episode is age-old leadership debate: Do you need to be an expert in what your team or organisation does to be an effective leader?
Jane successfully guided Swim England through the pandemic and describes herself as feeling fortunate to work in a sector that is based on fun. As a result, she encourages everyone in the organisation to embrace this in their day-to-day work.
Outside of swimming, Jane is grounded by her voluntary work with the Samaritans and enjoys participating in other volunteer-based organisations. She was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to swimming during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is Jane’s belief that with positive thinking directed in the ‘right’ direction, everything is possible, which is another key theme of this episode.
