What one does is what counts. Not what one had the intention of doing.

You know, I intended to do a lot of things in my life. I intended to achieve certain goals. I intended to be down to my goal weight by this time of the year.
However, as Pablo Picasso says in the quote above, What one does is what counts, not what one had the intention of doing. Now, not DOING what you intended to do does not make you a bad person. It happens to the best of people. We often have the greatest intentions. But, sometimes it is difficult to follow through on those intentions.
What is an intention? It's an aim or a plan.
I was interviewed today for a podcast. We were discussing goal setting and Carole Sanek, the host of The Crazy Marketing Ladies Show, asked why people that set New Year's Resolutions don't usually complete their resolution and give up.
I told her that people don't really set goals when they set their New Year's Resolution (NYR). They set intentions, not goals. The majority of people set an intention or a resolve to change something. However, because we (and I say we, because I have set many NYR's with an intention of completing them) just set the intent to change something, we don't create The What , The How or The Why for what we want to change. We don't set a goal.
But, as Picasso said, it's what people DO that counts. When you follow through with the intent. When you act on that intention, then it counts. Then you will likely achieve the intended outcome.
You probably intended to do a lot of things. You may not have done them, however. You can change that. Don't just go into the goal with the intent of doing it. Go in with the knowledge of what you want, the way to do it and the desire to see it through to the end and you will DO what it takes and do what you intended to do.

This Chinese Proverb is a great quote related to business leaders. To be a leader you must take care of your people. The people that work for you are your greatest asset in business. The people around you should be lifted up and helped to see and reach their potential.

Grow your people. Lead your people to their prosperity, to there excellence.

I have had the blessing to work for a few great leaders who have shown respect for their team members. They built their businesses with the people that work for them in mind. They built strong corporate cultures that allowed their teams to feel and be empowered to be successful. They invested in the their peoples education. They grew their people.

Subsequently, their people continue to work with them, for them. These leaders have fostered and grown loyal teams that want to be a part of every new encounter.

A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.

General George S. Patton, the great World War II General, knew how important planning was. The leader of thousands of men fighting important battles during the war had to plan and plan well. However, General Patton knew that sometimes you can't plan for everything. Some times, developing a perfect plan takes more time than you have available. Some times it's more important to have a good plan that you execute now.

I've heard and seen this quote put other ways. Several of my coworkers have signs posted on their walls,
Done is Better Than Perfect
It is more important to take the step! To do what needs to be done. It's better to complete your goals than to have a perfect plan.

Another quote that I heard along this same line is that
"90% of Research is Procrastination."
You have to plan, you have do the research and analysis to find the basic understanding of what the path is and the steps required for that path. But, you must not overdo the planning and research before you act.

I have seen and talked to way too many people that have used planning and research to delay their acting on their goals. I have been guilty of this myself. When you have the plan, when you have The What, The Why and the How, then you need to ACT!

US President, Theodore Roosevelt, was a Rough Rider, a soldier. He was a Goal Getter extraordinaire. When Teddy Roosevelt thought about doing something it usually got done. President Teddy Roosevelt was always to the point as well.

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are, is essentially saying Do It!

Don't spend time worrying with all of the minutia. Sometimes you have to use the things you have and where you are. I don't think he is talking about your physical location either. He is referring to where you are in your life.

Don't wait around for the perfect time, the perfect opportunity or being different that what you are now.

Go out today, wherever your are in life, If you've got a goal, a dream, Do what you can now. Don't wait until you are someone else. Just do it.

Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors, who unfortunately left the world too early due to bad decisions, speaks an important truth here. These are not song lyrics, but truth. The best way to overcome your fears is to confront those fears. Meet them head on and then when you overcome them that fear will have no power over you. You can have the freedom to be to who or what you want to without the fear. So, remove the fear that is holding you back by meeting the fear, doing the thing that you fear most. When you do that, you can move on.

What is the fear that is holding you back? Will you be better if you overcome that fear. Now is the time to look your fear in the eye . . . . and poke it with a stick!

Go out today, kick that fear out of your life. Kick the fears to the curb. Be the you that you have set out to be.
