Never Let the Fear of Striking Out Get in Your Way. - Babe Ruth
Base ball players hate to strike out. It is a failure to not get on base. Your OBP, or On Base Percentage is critical in today's game. I first heard of this statistic when I read the book Money Ball by Michael Lewis. My then boss and COO of our company, a numbers guy, told me about the book. I downloaded an audiobook of Money Ball and listened to it. I hadn't been interested in baseball in a while and this opened my eyes to it once again. The book was made into a movie.
The point was that having a home run is great, but the more times you get on base, the better chance you have of scoring. The odds of hitting it out of the park are low. Swinging for the fences is good, and like goals we want to have that Big Hairy Audacious Goal, that Grand Slam, but sometimes you have to work at our goals one step at a time.
The more players you get on base in an inning, the better odds for scoring. Getting on base is getting hits (singles, doubles and triples), enduring through mediocre pitches to a Base on Balls, a Walk, drawing a Balk, or even getting hit by the ball (ouch).
Striking out is often thought of as a failure. It's not good, but it happens. A pitcher will often try to paint the corners, or throw a curve or slider that looks like it's coming down the middle, but goes wide or low. Being able to watch the ball and waiting for the right pitch will result in 4 Balls before 3 Strikes and you are on base. If 4 batters are able to do that, you have 1 run and 3 more in line to continue.
If you are afraid of Striking Out, you may not be able to wait for that 4th ball. If you fear the strike, you may swing at the low and inside pitch and Strike Out. Or you may walk to First Base. Don't Fear the Strike Out and you may still achieve your goal of getting on base.
Now, if the right pitch comes along, Swing for the Fences - Take the Big Hairy Audacious Swing and Score the Home Run! But as Babe Ruth said,
Never Let the Fear of Striking Out Get in Your Way.

Go To GoalGettingPodcast.com/images Today and SIGN UP!Sir Richard Branson, the founder, face and voice of Virgin, is one of the most quoted businessmen today. He has achieved so much as the head of the many business entities in the Virgin family. And he didn't do it by following the rules.
You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing and falling over.
~~ Richard Branson
Richard Branson's quote here is one that most parents will understand. If you've had kids and watched them grow from birth to toddler, to adolescent, tweens and teens, you remember the lessons and rules you gave them on learning how to walk.
Wait, there were not lessons, AND there were no rules.
First off, they couldn't have understood them if there were, but more importantly, that isn't how we learn at that age. When we are just starting out we have to learn by doing.
We start to stand by ourselves . . . . Then fall over.
We fall over and over. We hit our head a few times as we pull ourselves up at the table. We struggle, then fall over.
We learn. We try again. We learn, and then finally, when you least expect it, the we let go of the table and this time we walk. . . by ourselves . . . sometimes falling but getting back up again.
Finally, we get the strength and skill built up in our legs, we get the hang of it, we get our balance.
And then, we're are off and running and roaming around doing things we didn't expect.
We worked so hard to learn . . . by doing . . . and by falling over . . .
We didn't follow the rules. We didn't go by a lesson plan. We didn't, but we learned.
Sometimes we plan, study, review, again and again before we attempt to do what we want to do. And never do!
Sometimes you have to just Do and Fall Over a few times.
One summer, Hatsumi Sensei, the Grandmaster of the martial art I studied, was in the San Francisco for a seminar. He did a Q & A session and one of the students asked him,
"How should I teach ninjutsu to my little girl. She is only 2 years old, but I want to start training her now."
Sensei, looked at him, and very matter of factly said,
"You should be watching her, learning from her. Little children do what's natural. They move naturally. . . "
That taught me a lesson that I understand today. We need to be like children in many areas. I love to watch babies. They take in everything that is going on. They listen, they watch, they do! They copy and imitate what we do until they become good at it. They don't just watch and study us. . . they duplicate what we do, until they can do it like us.
Do you spend too much time watching, thinking, studying, . . . Researching things. . . instead of doing?
Do you get into Analysis Paralysis?
I've hear it said that "Research is 90% Procrastination."
Learn by Doing and Falling Over.
Go out Today and Do Something. If you Fall Over, Get Up & Do it again. and again . and again . do it differently if you have to, but Do it and Learn. Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.
~~ Booker T. Washington
Booker T. Washington overcame a lot of obstacles to be successful. According to Wikipedia:
"Booker T. Washington (April 5, 1856 – November 14, 1915) was an African-American educator, author, orator, and adviser to presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African-American community."
He was born into slavery and lived during a time that was tough for a black man, even if he was free. He had to overcome many obstacles to survive much less be successful. But he became successful.
Most of will not know the obstacles that Booker T. Washington had to overcome. We will complain about a few inconveniences on our road to success. It is best that we all remember what Booker T. Washington said:
Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.
If you have overcome your own obstacles or those thrown at you by others, then you can count yourself a success.
Go out today and overcome the obstacles put in your path, whether by you or others. Go To GoalGettingPodcast.com/images Today and SIGN UP! You are what you think all day long. ~~ Dr. Robert SchullerDr. Schuller talks about a very good point with this quote. Our subconscious mind learns from what we say. Telling yourself that You Suck, or You're Stupid is very bad. Your mind will believe you!

You will not be at your best if you continuously talk down to yourself. You are a powerful person, that means a lot to your own subconscious mind. You can program your subconscious mind, negatively, by having those mental thoughts and especially if you verbalize them.
One of my favorite websites and one I recommend is TUT.com. Their motto is:
Thoughts become things . . . Choose the good ones![bctt tweet="Thoughts become things . . . Choose the good ones! www.Tut.com #Goals #Quote "]
When you are thinking during the day, think good things. Don't concentrate on the negative and NEVER say anything bad about yourself to yourself.

C. S. Lewis was a prolific Christian author that wrote 30 books that include "The Chronicles of Narnia". Lewis is also one of the most loved Christian thinker and is often quoted.
Today's quote really resonates with me. I have plenty of experience in many areas. I have learned many things and tried many things. I don't believe I have failed at any of the things that I have done. I've had business that have gone out of business for various reasons, but they didn't fail. I learned valuable lessons from each job, business or experience I was a part of.
I have been working in the the same industry and field, mortgage banking technology for many years. However, within the last couple of years I developed a love for and then a passion for Social Media Marketing. I have always had a passion for teaching, mentoring, public speaking and building communities. About a year and a half ago, I decided I wanted to change my career. I was over what I was doing. I wasn't enjoying what I did any more. I set a goal to either get a position in Social Media Marketing or Community Management or to start my own business in the field.
Now, the reason this quote resonates so much is I am over 50. I made a decision to make a MAJOR career change. A completely different field and potentially different industry. Plus, I was wanting to go into a field most commonly associated with Millennials not Boomers like me. But, I set my goal and started following my passion.
Last month, I was offered and accepted a position as an Internal Community Manager for the company I work for. The reason I was selected was because of my passion, my desire and the communities and following I had grown on social media.
