In episode 115, I explained how networking can be one of the most kind and genuinely human activities you engage in in business, and I explained how it can provide rocket fuel to your success.
In this episode, I will teach you about the mindset necessary for effective networking. I compare two experiences I had over the last few days and explain how one approach failed miserably and how the other made me a raving fan. It all comes down to mindset.
Before you listen to this episode, please listen to episode 115 because this is really a sequel to that episode and you will have a fuller experience if you listen to one before the other.

I recently began a new segment entitled Notable Quotables.
I review the best quotes of one particular leader and I unpack the very best of what that leader has to say (99% lean beef; 1% fat).
In this episode, I review the leadership quotes of Dwight Eisenhower—Supreme Allied Commander in World War II and 34th President of the United States.
I have deep respect for Eisenhower and we will try to understand him more by examining a number of his more famous quotes. You don’t want to miss this episode.

In this episode, I discuss a number of valuable concepts that help you make sound decisions. These are economic principles I discussed in my textbook. I cover the Pareto principle (80/20 rule), Metcalfe’s law, Parkinson’s law (e.g., the First Law of Bureaucracy), rational ignorance, bounded rationality, satisficing, and the law of unintended consequences.

Organizational change is a predictable process. In this episode, I talk about the change process. I provide an overview of John Kotter’s 8-step change process. Kotter is a Harvard professor and I use his books in both my undergrad and my graduate classes. This is the most practical guide to the change process.
When change efforts fail, it is also predictable, and it is likely the result of skipping the first step. If you will ever be involved in a change effort, you do not want to miss this episode.

Networking is fundamental to success in business, but many people avoid networking. It feels slimy—like you are using people for your purposes. Networking events can feel artificial, and they make people feel uncomfortable.
But networking can be one of the most kind and genuinely human activities you engage in in business. It can simultaneously provide rocket-fuel to your success.
In this episode, I will teach you how to network.

It is thanksgiving. Millions of Americans are traveling home to see their families. Governors across the states have instituted some heavy-handed mandates in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Here are the articles I mentioned:
Here is the New York Times article:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/11/24/upshot/thanksgiving-dinner-survey.html
Here is the NBC Affiliate article covering each state’s
https://www.wsav.com/news/coronavirus/traveling-for-thanksgiving-check-out-covid-19-restrictions-by-state/
We will talk about the restrictions, but as importantly, we will talk about leadership and how leaders could more effectively navigate during these difficult times.

In this episode, I welcome Jim Cain back to the program. Jim was on the program discussing Earnest Shackleton in Episode 111. Jim is a trainer who travels to organizations to teach team-building
Now imagine that you were a trainer. You conduct corporate and outdoor trainings (e.g., think ropes courses). COVID-19 hits and your entire business shuts down because you cannot interact with people in person. How would you translate these activities to virtual training? Jim will tell you how he has successfully navigated 2020.

In this episode, we consider how the first truly virtual holiday season will be different from days gone by. As we gather in smaller groups, connect with loved ones on Zoom, and forgo larger crowds on Black Friday, what effect will it have on retailers who depend on holiday sales? How will business be different? How must you adjust?
I discuss the article How A Zoom Thanksgiving Celebration Will Impact Black Friday, written by Blake Morgan in Forbes. You can find it here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/blakemorgan/2020/11/19/how-a-zoom-thanksgiving-celebration-will-impact-black-friday/?sh=3ee1fb841e77

EARNEST SHACKLETON’S REMARKABLE LEADERSHIP [INTERVIEW WITH EXPERT JIM CAIN] [EPISODE 111]
Earnest Shackleton was a polar explorer. He intended to transverse the South Pole in 1914, but when his wooden ship was crushed by ice, his only mission was to save his men.
In this episode I speak with Team Trainer and Shackleton Expert, Jim Cain. Jim runs a training based on Shackleton’s experience. If you are at all familiar with Shackleton’s experience, you do not want to miss this episode.
If you would like to learn more about Jim Cain or read about his trainings, go to http://www.teamworkandteamplay.com/

Each Twitter Tuesday, I discuss a handful of quotes about leadership and unpack them. I pre-select useful quotes; I do not just read my twitter feed—and I will give credit to the author of the quote, the person who posted, or both where possible.
Last week, I reviewed the best leadership advice that people provided in the leadership community on Facebook. This week, I picked up where I left off because the comments were just so good.
