  • Working together as a Team – Audio and Lighting with Scott Adamson

This week on the podcast we have a special guest. Scott Adamson of The Production Academy will be joining us to discuss how audio and lighting can work together as a team.

The sponsor of this week’s episode is Amazon, you’ve heard of them, right? Through Amazon, if you do purchase any items from them, we would love for you to use my link, Amazon, and we get a small commission for referring you. This is a great way to help the show that we bring to you for free!

    Main Segment (1:27) Introduction

We have a special guest joining us today to talk about ways for audio and lighting teams to work together in a production. Scott Adamson from The Production Academy offers both free and paid courses for audio.

David: To get started, how did you get involved with audio? You then pivoted to offering courses for those who want to learn more about audio.

I first got into audio as a kid because I loved music and playing drums as well as guitars. With this start, I knew if I learned audio I could always be involved with music.

At first, I started with recording my own band and that’s when I realized there were actual job positions for that line of work. I then shifted to having a career as an audio sound engineer. My first sound job was actually when I was 18, so I just dived in and went from there.

There are college courses available but for this line of work it just made more sense to just start with a company or a job, then work your way up.

Topic: Working on a Production Team (8:30)

There are situations where a group will be working together and you have part of the team saying, “that’s not my job” or “audio is suppose to be handling that part”.

Ultimately, everyone is on the same team when it comes to putting together a production. More companies will hire you if you have a great team player attitude. That’s also the same when teams work together.

Coordination between lighting and audio is very important when tying the details together for an event. A good production manager or even a crew chief is great to have when everything is being set up.

Working as a team together will bring everything together and help give the production a good run.

Topic: Electricity Between Lighting and Audio (17:00)

There have been issues in past productions where certain lighting equipment, such as dimmers, would actually interfere with the audio.

With certain setups, especially when working with a lot of lights, you do want to together on making sure to separate and setup the electric properly so that it doesn’t interfere with the audio.

This is when it is very important to have everyone working together as a team and keeping the communication open with everyone so that there are limited issues.

Topic: About Production Live Academy (26:00)
