Its rare that a comedy writer/performer can say they had a gig for nearly 4 decades working with the same performer, or broadcaster in this case; an exception to the rule, no doubt. Well, hold onto your hotdogs kids, we got one as our guest this week. Gerard Mulligan can trace his history in the lore of Letterman ALL the way back. Before (The) Late Show. Before Late Night. Before The David Letterman Show. Gerry first started writing jokes for Dave at one of the most important times in Letterman's career; when he was guest hosting Johnny Carson's 'Tonight Show.' Gerry is a legendary fixture in the Letterman family. He appeared on screen hundreds of times, and was a part many, many big and little moments on the shows. Gerry and Mike became fast friends and in this episode, and begin the monumental task of going over the incredible number of highlights from Gerry's unprecedented tenure. The show begins with a Tom Dreesen story, weaves through big moments with Chris Elliot to 9/11, and small moments where he would appear as a cicada with everything between. Gerard is a man who literally helped synthesize the very fabric and textures that Letterman & Co are made up of. Thank goodness he agreed to come back sooner than later for part 2. and 3. and 4. This is a must watch/listen episode for Letterman enthusiasts of all eras. As always, The Letterman Podcast is brought to you by The Hello Deli. Rupert Jee has been a cheerleader of The Letterman Podcast before the first show was uploaded, and we couldn't be more proud to type those words. If you are looking for official 'Late Show with David Letterman' merch, Rupert is one of the only places to get it. Go to hello-deli.com and check out all the merch he has.
