Why do you take things so personally, even when you know someone else's behavior might have nothing to do with you?
An unanswered text. A friend who can't show up. Someone setting a boundary. Suddenly, you're not just disappointed. You're questioning whether you're important, lovable, or simply too much.
In Episode 53 of The Liberated Lesbian Lounge, Annie M Henderson explores why rejection feels so personal, how people-pleasing affects relationships, and how the stories we tell ourselves can become beliefs about our identity and self-worth.
You'll discover:
Why an unanswered text can trigger feelings of rejection or abandonment
How to separate what happened from what you made it mean
Why people-pleasers sometimes expect others to demonstrate love through self-sacrifice
How to respect someone else's boundaries without abandoning yourself
The difference between having needs and making someone responsible for meeting them
How to stop letting old beliefs define who you are today
TRY THE STORY AUDIT
Think of something you've repeatedly told yourself, like "I'm too much," "Nobody chooses me," or "I'm bad at relationships."
Ask yourself:
Where did I learn this story?
What evidence have I been overlooking?
What becomes possible if I stop treating this story as a permanent fact?
You don't have to force yourself to think positively. Start by getting curious about what else might be true.

Keep untangling. Keep trusting. Keep becoming.
Do you feel guilty relaxing, having fun, or putting yourself first? If you're always waiting until the work is done, everyone else is happy, or life finally slows down, this episode is for you.
In this episode of The Liberated Lesbian Lounge, Annie M Henderson explores people-pleasing, productivity guilt, self-care guilt, and why so many women feel they have to earn their happiness. We're talking about the difference between relief and joy, reconnecting with what you actually enjoy, and giving yourself permission to live a little more of your life right now.
IN THIS EPISODE:
• Why relaxing or having fun can make you feel guilty, even when you've done nothing wrong
• The invisible finish line that keeps you postponing happiness
• Why relief and joy aren't the same thing
• How people-pleasing and always being responsible can disconnect you from what you actually want
• Why you don't have to be productive, talented, or good at something to enjoy it
• What learning the cello is teaching me about being a beginner and doing something simply because I want to
• Why it's not too late for new friendships, adventures, hobbies, and experiences
• The Joy Audit, a simple practice to help you rediscover what makes you feel alive
A LITTLE SOMETHING TO TRY THIS WEEK
Ask yourself:
What's something I used to love doing?
What's something I've always been curious about trying?
What's one enjoyable thing I can do this week without needing to justify it?
And please, don't turn this into another self-improvement assignment. 😂
You don't have to earn your joy by finishing everything on your to-do list.
Joy is not a reward for getting everything right. It's part of being alive.

Episode 51: When Being Independent Becomes Lonely
What happens when being the strong, capable, independent woman becomes the very thing keeping you from the connection you want?
In this episode, we're exploring the difference between independence, hyper-independence, and interdependence—and why learning to receive love, support, and kindness can feel surprisingly uncomfortable.
IN THIS EPISODE:
• The difference between "I can take care of myself" and "I must take care of myself."
• A personal story about how quickly we can reject kindness without even realizing it.
• Why being needed and being loved are two very different experiences.
• How being "low-maintenance" can sometimes keep people from knowing what you actually need.
• Why admiration and intimacy aren't the same thing.
• How to build relationships where you can remain independent AND receive support.
• The Receiving Experiment: a seven-day practice to help you notice what happens when you allow yourself to receive.
• Why someone saying no to your request doesn't mean you were wrong to ask.
• How to stop making yourself indispensable just to feel worthy of love.
YOUR PRACTICE THIS WEEK:
For seven days, notice opportunities to receive.
Accept a compliment without dismissing it.
Let someone help when you'd genuinely welcome it.
Tell someone what you actually want.
Ask for something you need.
And notice what happens inside you.
You don't have to earn the right to receive by first proving how much you can give.

Keep untangling. Keep trusting. Keep becoming.
What if some of the patterns you’re trying to get rid of aren’t signs that something is wrong with you, but signs that something in you got really good at protecting you?
In this episode, I’m getting personal about my own exploration of hypervigilance and looking at the surprising connections between people-pleasing, defensiveness, boundaries, and the ways we protect ourselves long after the original danger has passed.
In this episode, we explore:
• Why hypervigilance doesn’t always look like fear. Sometimes it looks like preparation, anticipating, rehearsing, and reading the room.
• The “smoke detector” metaphor and what happens when a protective system becomes so sensitive that everything starts looking like danger.
• A question I’m asking myself: “Am I responding to what is actually happening between us, or am I responding to what I’m preparing myself for them to do?”
• How people-pleasing can protect us from having to experience someone else’s disappointment, anger, or hurt.
• Why the opposite of people-pleasing is NOT “I don’t care how you feel.”
• The difference between managing someone’s emotions and taking responsibility for how you participate in a relationship.
• How boundaries can sometimes swing into armor.
• Defensiveness and the powerful question: “Am I trying to be understood, or am I trying to win the case?”
• How to care about someone else without abandoning yourself.
• What I’m taking away from another full week of RIM training, plus the emerging peer-reviewed research examining what may be happening during the RIM process.
• Why awareness isn’t about turning yourself into another problem to solve.
And your practice this week is simple:
Catch your alarm once.
Notice when you’re scanning, rehearsing, people-pleasing, getting defensive, or building the case.
Then ask:
“What am I protecting right now?”
and
“Does this moment actually require this much protection?”
Maybe liberation isn’t throwing away everything that once protected us.
Maybe it’s learning when we need it...and when we can finally put some of it down.

Episode 49: You’re Allowed to Change Your Mind
What happens when something you once chose honestly no longer fits the person you’ve become? Annie explores identity, consistency, sunk costs, and the difference between genuinely evolving and abandoning yourself because change makes other people uncomfortable.
In this episode:
• Why some decisions eventually become identities
• The hidden pressure inside “I’m the kind of person who…”
• Why you don’t have to make Past You wrong to let Present You choose differently
• How two different chapters of your life can both have been true
• The grief that can come with outgrowing an old version of yourself
• Why time, love, money, or energy already invested doesn’t automatically mean you should continue
• What happens when other people are invested in your consistency
• Why publicly changing your mind can feel so embarrassing
• The difference between revision and retreat
• How labels can help us—and sometimes begin to police us
• A guided exercise for identifying what still fits, what has changed, and what you want to carry forward
A question to take with you:
What if I didn’t have to prove Past Me wrong in order to let Present Me be different?
You don’t have to make your old life a lie for your new life to be true.
And changing your mind doesn’t always mean you couldn’t trust yourself.
Sometimes it means you kept listening.

Episode 48: There Might Not Be a Right Choice
What if the decision you're agonizing over doesn't have one correct answer hiding inside it? Annie explores the pressure to make the “right” choice, the unlived lives created by every meaningful decision, and how to choose when every option contains both possibility and loss.
In this episode:
• Why trying to optimize every decision can make choosing nearly impossible
• The “unlived life” we create whenever we choose one path over another
• Why imaginary alternatives often look better than real life
• The difference between a good decision and a good outcome
• Why every meaningful yes also contains a no
• How to think in terms of trade-offs instead of right versus wrong
• Why grief can sometimes masquerade as confusion
• Reversible versus less-reversible decisions
• When more thinking stops creating clarity
• A guided exercise for comparing two possible lives without demanding certainty
A question to take with you:
Which trade-offs am I willing to live with?
You may never know what would have happened behind the door you didn’t choose.
But the unlived life isn’t automatically the better life.
It’s simply the one you didn’t live.

EPISODE 47: THE SPACE BETWEEN TRUTH AND ACTION
When You Know What You Want… But You’re Not Ready to Do Anything About It Yet
What happens when you finally know what’s true for you…but you’re not ready to change your life around it?
In Episode 47 of The Liberated Lesbian Lounge, Annie M Henderson explores the space between knowing and doing—and how to tell whether you’re genuinely building readiness or waiting for fear to finally give you permission.
IN THIS EPISODE:
• Why knowing what you want doesn’t automatically create the capacity to act on it
• Why readiness does NOT mean the absence of fear
• The difference between preparation and postponement
• How to get specific about what “I’m not ready” actually means
• Why grief can exist alongside a decision that’s right for you
• The particular challenge people-pleasers face when other people aren’t “ready” for their choices
• How to identify what would actually increase your capacity
• A guided readiness inventory you can practice with Annie
• How to stop waiting for the whole life to feel possible and identify your next honest step
A QUESTION TO TAKE WITH YOU:
When I say, “I’m not ready”…
What am I actually waiting for?
Because readiness isn’t always something you wait for.
Sometimes, readiness is something you build.
And you don’t have to be ready for the whole life.
You only have to become ready for the next honest step.

EPISODE 46: WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY WANT?
Why such a simple question can feel terrifying when you’ve spent your life becoming who everyone else needed.
What do you want?
It sounds like such a simple question.
Until you realize you’ve spent years becoming incredibly good at knowing what everyone else wants — what will make your partner happy, what your kids need, what your mother expects, what will keep the peace, and what will make everyone comfortable.
But what about you?
In this episode of The Liberated Lesbian Lounge, Annie M Henderson explores why “I don’t know what I want” doesn’t always mean you’re confused.
Sometimes you know exactly what you want.
You just don’t let yourself know it for very long.
We untangle:
A question to sit with this week:
If nobody needed anything from me for just a moment…
What might I want?
You don’t have to act on the answer.
You don’t have to justify it.
You don’t even have to tell anyone.
Maybe the first step is simply allowing yourself to hear it.
Because you don’t have to build your entire life around everything you want.
But you deserve to know what you want before you decide what to do with it.
WORK WITH ANNIE
If you’re thinking, “I don’t know what I want anymore,” you don’t have to figure it out before asking for support.
You can arrive with the question.

What if the person you most want to understand you… never does?
In Episode 45 of The Liberated Lesbian Lounge, Annie explores what happens when explaining yourself stops being communication and starts becoming a search for permission.
We’ll untangle the difference between understanding, agreement, validation, permission, and closure—and what real self-trust looks like when someone you love still sees the story differently.
Because maybe closure isn’t finally getting them to understand.
Maybe closure is realizing you can stop explaining.
EPISODE 45: WHAT IF THEY NEVER UNDERSTAND?
How to Trust Yourself When Someone You Love Doesn't Agree With Your Version of the Story
Have you ever explained yourself so many times that you realized you weren’t actually saying anything new?
You were just trying again.
Different words. Different examples. A softer tone. More context.
Maybe if you could explain it perfectly enough, they would finally say:
“Oh. I understand.”
But what happens if they never do?
In this episode of The Liberated Lesbian Lounge, Annie M Henderson explores the painful space between wanting to be understood and needing someone else’s understanding before we feel allowed to trust ourselves.
We untangle:
Understanding vs. agreement vs. validation vs. permission
How explaining can quietly become negotiation
Why disagreement can feel so threatening to people-pleasers
The difference between self-trust and simply believing you’re always right
Why two people can experience the same relationship very differently
How to remain accountable without abandoning yourself
What you may actually be waiting for someone to say
Why closure doesn’t always come through an apology or mutual understanding
How to stop putting your life on trial
And what it means to leave the door open without spending your life standing beside it
One question to take with you:
Am I communicating… or am I trying to earn permission?
You are allowed to wish they understood.
You are allowed to grieve that they don’t.
You can listen to someone else’s version without automatically abandoning your own.
And sometimes closure isn’t finally being understood.
Sometimes closure is realizing you can stop explaining.

Who Are You When You Don't Have to Be Her Anymore?
What if the parts of yourself you've been trying hardest to get rid of are actually parts you need to thank?
The people-pleasing. The hyper-independence. The need to be useful. The ability to read a room before you've even checked in with yourself. The woman who never asks for help. The woman who keeps everybody laughing. The woman who can handle anything.
In this episode of The Liberated Lesbian Lounge, we're going deeper than simply identifying old patterns. We're exploring what happens when survival skills become identity — and how to tell the difference between a quality you genuinely want to keep and an adaptation that's still choosing for you.
Because maybe your independence really does belong to you.
Maybe your sensitivity is a gift.
Maybe your competence is real.
Maybe your humor is absolutely yours.
The question isn't simply, "Was this an adaptation?"
The better question might be:
Do I still choose this... or does it choose me?
IN THIS EPISODE
We explore what happens when a strategy becomes an identity, why freedom can sometimes feel more disorienting than freeing, and what happens when the people around you still expect the old version of you.
We'll also talk about why healing doesn't require rejecting the woman you used to be — and why the goal isn't to excavate your personality until you find some untouched "real you" underneath it all.
Instead, you get to decide what comes with you.
BRING IT IN
There's an experiential practice inside this episode that I hope you won't skip.
You'll spend a few moments with earlier versions of yourself — not to judge them with everything you know now, but to understand what they knew then, what they were carrying, and what choices they believed they had.
And then you'll ask her two questions:
What did you become that I don't need anymore?
And...
What did you become that you hope I never lose?
PEOPLE AREN'T BROKEN
We become exactly who we need to become... until we no longer need to.
Understanding that doesn't mean staying stuck.
It means we stop trying to create change through contempt for ourselves.
You don't have to make the woman who got you here your enemy.
You can thank what protected you.
Keep what is yours.
Release what has finished its work.
And begin asking:
Who do I choose to become now?
WORK WITH ANNIE
If you're in a season where you're leaving an old identity, relationship, belief system, family role, career, or version of yourself — and you're realizing you genuinely don't know what's YOU anymore — this is work I love doing one-on-one.
My job isn't to replace everyone else's instructions with mine.
It's to help you hear yourself again: your values, your body, your truth, and your choices — and practice living from there.

NEXT WEEK
Once you begin making choices from who you are now, there's a very real possibility that somebody you love won't understand them.
So what happens if they never understand?
If they never agree with your version of the story?
If they never give you closure?
If they never finally say, "You were right"?
Can you still trust yourself when someone you love doesn't understand you?
That's where we're going next.
