They discuss: — How labels like "narcissist" and "psychopath" become shortcuts that shut down empathy — The psychological payoffs of demonizing someone you love — Nina's story of staying curious and connected with a politically passionate family member — Robin's personal experience of being demonized — and what it feels like to have the door shut on you — Self-regulation and why it's the foundation of every good conversation — Questions to ask yourself when you notice the pattern

Leaders have to coach, counsel, encourage and motivate. How we say what we say matters.
By first writing down our thoughts we become better speakers, teachers, mentors, and coaches.
Issues in speaking (and teaching, mentoring, and coaching) come from a lack of clear, concise communication.
Our words, and tone, need to come from our gut.
Before we respond it's critical to take time to listen to the other person. Actively listen to what is said.
When speaking on Zoom, arrive early and engage with people there. Use the chat. Invite people to answer your questions in the chat so you can hear from more people. Ask the same questions you would in a live event.
During your talk, when telling your stories, do it in a way that makes the person who is listening see themselves in the story (i.e. the same thing happened to me! Or, I feel the same way). Be relatable.
Be yourself and connect with the people who resonate with you and your story. You don't need to try to be anyone else (like a speaker you admire or who has trained you).
Make your talk like a song. Songs have hooks, verses, choruses, bridges, dynamics, intros, and outros. Listen to music and notice all the ways songs keep you engaged. Use the same ideas to make your talk engaging and keep people leaning in.
Listen to the radio announcers to understand vocal variety.

Feeling depressed ranges from feelings of sadness to feelings that life is no longer worth living. Robin is not a doctor but she has been directly impacted by the outcomes of severe depression when her beloved Aunt Judy ended her life several years ago.
In this micro episode, Robin asks hard questions, triggering questions, not to make you feel worse but to get underneath the hood and potentially expose what's operating beneath the surface of feeling depressed.

There are times when we feel betrayed. Either we have misunderstood or someone else has misrepresented themselves or their intentions. The question really is, when we feel betrayed, where do we point the finger and who suffers the most as a result?

Anger is the HOT emotion and keeps people at a distance. Although we can feel righteous in our anger, it doesn't always serve us or our relationships with others. We can get a handle on it when we dig into our triggers that set us up for feeling angry.

1. It's critical to do our best to maintain our balance during unsettling times. One way to help ourselves is to watch what we allow into our lives (such as movies, media, and conversations).
3. It's very important to recharge yourself so you can give to your family, clients, and relationships. Recharging is doing what feels good to you like dancing, sleeping, walking, reading, exercising, etc...
4. If we don't recharge, we eventually run out of juice. We become less effective.
5. When we are able to sync our business cycle with our personal cycle, we have more to give our clients.

Disappointment can take many forms, but it usually comes from unmet expectations. Of course, it can be triggered by any number of situations where we feel let down. It can also be habitual - we can develop a habit of setting ourselves up to be disappointed by not getting clarity about the results we're expecting. Learn how to spot the 'set up' and avoid it or resolve it when it happens.
