I never met my grandfather.  He died very young.  If I had the chance, though, there are lots of questions I would want to ask him.   Where did you grow up?  What was it like there?  Tell me about your relationships with your siblings.  How did you feel the first time you saw my grandma?  How did you meet?

I think it's natural that anyone would want to know the answers to these questions about their relatives.  So, then, isn't it natural that our kids, grandkids and great-grandkids would want to know the same things about us?

Here's the difference... we now live in a time period where today's technology allows us to record videos of us telling our stories in a format that can be shared forever.   How Cool!

The third week of October is always Estate Planning Awareness Week.  If you're like me, you're tired of being told what to be aware of.  Someone is always telling me I need to be aware of some social issue that doesn't really impact me.

But this one does.  Estate Planning does impact you.  Unless you know something I don't, we will all eventually need an estate plan.  We will all have an illness.  We will all eventually pass away. This isn't optional.

What is optional is whether you have a plan when things do go wrong.  Most adult Americans never plan.  This is why you'll hear people say "boy when my Dad passed away, it was a mess!".  
It was a mess because Dad didn't do an estate plan or didn't have a good estate plan.  Don't let this be your fate.  Don't let them tell stories about how you didn't plan well.  Let's get it done and let's get it done correctly.

All of these pieces of advice are given by accountants, financial advisors and lawyers.  All of them may be absolutely terrible advice.  So why are these falsehoods being spread?  Sometimes the advisor really doesn't know.  Sometimes the lawyer has biases.  Some times the accountant is making incorrect assumptions.  Sometimes they just simply give bad advice.  

How do you know what is right for you?  Ask the advisor how they work with you to ascertain your goals.  Far too often, professionals give advice before truly digging deep enough to uncover the real goals.
