Imposter syndrome is not evidence you're in the wrong place. Self-doubt is not a red flag. And absorbing your team's work because they look busy isn't kindness, it's an assumption that's costing them.
This week's three lightbulbs come from a leadership development programme module on confidence, a group coaching call, and a fireside chat delivered for a third-party wellbeing provider. Three different formats, one thread: the habits that feel protective are often the ones quietly keeping everyone stuck.
This week's 3 lightbulbs:
Lightbulb 1: Imposter syndrome isn't evidence you're not good enough. It's evidence you care.
The dictionary definition matters here, because it gets misused constantly. Imposter syndrome is a persistent, internalised fear of being exposed as a fraud. Not nerves before a presentation. Not uncertainty in a new role. Persistent. Internalised. Which means most people who talk openly about having it, probably don't, because the fear stays inside. What most leaders are describing is the discomfort of stepping outside their comfort zone, which is completely normal. And more to the point, it's a good sign.
Lightbulb 2: Absorbing a task without asking is an assumption. And it's costing them.
A leader held back from delegating a task because she could see her colleague was stretched. Rather than ask, she quietly did it herself. What she missed: her colleague might have deprioritised something else to take it on. Might have valued the development opportunity. Might have said yes. By absorbing it silently, she robbed them of the chance to build capability and make their own informed choice.
Lightbulb 3: Your one-to-one is your hour. So is theirs.
One-to-ones are one of the most underused leadership tools available, and with everything changing in the workplace right now, they matter more than ever. The problem: most people walk in and wait to be led. The conversation becomes reactive. Nothing important gets covered. The fix works on two levels: as a leader, protect the time and give your team permission and expectation to come in prepared. And when you go to your own one-to-one with your line manager, have an agenda. Know what you want to walk out with. Don't wait to be asked.
One thread through all three: the habits that feel protective, absorbing the doubt, absorbing the task, waiting to be led, are often the ones quietly keeping everyone stuck.
Before you go, which one landed for you? Now you know what you know, what will you do differently? Small, simple, specific. That's how overwhelmed becomes intentional.
