Remove This Barrier to Create a High Performing Team

    SUMMARY SECTION

Many leaders are reluctant to give young and inexperienced staff a chance in senior positions. James Rule explores why this flawed mindset is a barrier that must be removed to build high performing teams. He shares an example of how giving a young inexperienced member of his team an opportunity was transformational for the individual and business performance.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Too many leaders have become fearful of giving young and inexperienced staff an opportunity. Without the opportunity they will never gain experience!

What is average age and length of tenure of your senior management team?

Leaders must reflect on their team and identify who has potential to step into leadership roles in the future.

The upside of youth and inexperience is a fresh perspective, innovative thinking and energy.

Aspiring leaders must be proactive and take steps to get on their management’s radar by sharing their ideas and showcasing their energy.

It is easier to develop talent from within than recruit externally.

  • Three Powerful Ways to Enhance Your Mindset

    EPISODE THIRTEEN

Three Powerful Ways to Enhance Your Mindset

    SUMMARY

The quality of the input determines the quality of the output!

Think of the inputs we absorb into our minds as the fuel to our mindset and mental wellbeing. We must aspire to find the best quality fuel.

We cannot optimise our mindset and subsequent professional and personal performance if we do not curate the daily inputs into our mind with care.

James Rule presents three areas of input to consider and three challenges that when addressed can powerfully enhance your mindset.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    NEWS CONSUMPTION

Bad news sells. Print and digital media recognise this and create headlines and news stories accordingly. We are given more of what we purchase / click on, sensationalised stories, written so that they illicit feelings of fear, frustration and anger.

How many times do you return to news consumption each day?

Challenge - Experiment with limiting your daily news consumption.

    FRIENDSHIPS

We can find ourselves maintaining friendships that no longer serve us.

You have complete control over who you choose to spend time with, talk and engage with.

Challenge - When you have interacted with a friend socially face to face or over the phone reflect on how you feel?

    SOCIAL MEDIA

We are spending hours per day lost in social media, often mindlessly scrolling with no key objective other than observing and comparing.

As stated by Theodore Roosevelt “comparison is the thief of joy.”

Challenge - Monitor how much time you spend scrolling each day. Also when you step off the platform be conscious of how you feel. Do you feel energised, motivated and empowered? Or drained, frustrated and disempowered?

Eight Steps to Create a Quality Culture

    SUMMARY

Culture can be defined as the shared beliefs, values and practices that shape the behaviour of staff within an organisation.

A leader has a critical role to play as the cultural architect. They must role model through their words and actions the behaviours that they wish to see embraced by their team.

  • Leadership Essentials: Delegation

    EPISODE ELEVEN

    Leadership Essentials: Delegation

    SUMMARY

Delegation is something that so many leaders struggle with. They have a mindset that they can do a task better than their colleagues so they retain it. Invariably they recognise they should train staff to enhance their skills and subsequent ability to execute the task, but do not feel they have the time.

James Rule shares six steps to help every leader master this critical leadership essential.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    PREPARE

Review your To Do List and ask yourself what can I delegate, delete and do?

Without taking the time to ask and reflect on this simple question you are left with one huge and ever expanding To Do List.

    ASSIGN

You have colleagues with a range of competencies. Reflect and decide who is best placed to help you with the task in hand.

    BE SPECIFIC

A lack of clarity dooms delegation to failure. Be very clear and specific about what result you desire. Ensure your colleague is clear on the outcome. Encourage them to ask as many questions as they need to establish that clarity. Finally ensure they have the resources they need to execute effectively.

    DO NOT MICROMANAGE

You must have trust in your people. To micromanage implies that you do not. It is a sure fire way to frustrate and erode creativity. You have set the destination (result) you expect and get out of the way and let them show you how they intend to get there.

    FEEDBACK

It is essential to spend time reviewing the delegated work and providing feedback to the individual who delivered it. This often neglected step is invaluable. It allows you to educate and train your colleague so they can improve future execution.

It also highlights any gaps in your delivery in the ‘Be Specific’ step. These learnings, when implemented, significantly increase the success of delegation which naturally improves leaders' willingness and ability to delegate.

    GRATITUDE

Understanding the complex needs and demands of your boss is not always straightforward. People usually have a lengthy ´To Do List´ prior to the arrival of this newly delegated task! You can create a sense of overwhelm and frustration when you delegate.

A leader needs to recognise that and be genuine in expressing their gratitude for the support they receive form their colleague.

  • Leadership Essentials: Authenticity

    EPISODE TEN

    Leadership Essentials: Authenticity

    SUMMARY

James Rule has compiled a list of Leadership Essentials. They are drawn from his experiences and insights as a chief executive, coach, mentor and from decades of research.

These essentials should form an integral part of every leadership style. The series begins with a focus on authenticity.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Peer pressure permeates so many aspects of our lives. We feel a pressure to conform, to live, act and lead in the way that society expects us to. In our desire to fit in we can be tempted to disown our values. It is imperative that we resist that pressure!

We all have a set of signature strengths. These core characteristics are the ones that come most naturally to us. To live and lead with authenticity we must align our words and actions with these signature strengths. This in turn elicits a feeling of engagement and aliveness.

Authenticity is a critical Leadership Essential. Finding our authentic voice and leadership style yields numerous benefits:

Health and wellbeing- Science has proved that a key way to find greater happiness and wellbeing is ensure we are aligned with our signature strengths. Conversely, when we lose that alignment, we are likely to disempower our mindset and erode our energy at best and in more severe cases, become depressed.

Relationships- To lead effectively a leader needs to develop relationships and a primary driver in this process is trust. Staff get a sense when their leader is being inauthentic and that erodes trust. Conversely when they feel their leader is aligned with their values and they are seeing the real person, it fosters a deeper level of trust and connection.

Clarity- Most leaders must work with large and diverse stakeholder groups. It is impossible to please everybody all of the time. Attempting to do so is futile and can be incredibly draining in terms of physical and mental energy. We cannot be “all things to all men.”

Staying true to our signature strengths and leading with authenticity acts as a form of ‘North Star’ - a guiding light that helps bring clarity to the plethora of decisions that need to be made daily.

Resilience- Every leader will face challenges and be compelled to lead through periods of adversity. Remaining true to their authentic self in words and actions helps maintain their self-belief and faith in their ability. The knowledge that they are aligned with their signature strengths enables them to act decisively and with real determination.

Have you ever reflected on what your signature strengths are? Are you aligning your words and actions to those strengths to bring the authentic you to your professional role and personal life?

    EPISODE EIGHT

    Dealing with criticism

    SUMMARY

Fear of criticism is one of the most debilitating barriers to creating and sustaining high performance. James Rule draws upon his unique career experiences and shares tools that can help anyone suppress that fear and ensure that they are better placed to optimise their performance.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

For people in leadership roles, criticism comes with territory. If we allow the fear of criticism to dominate we will never be able to sustain high performance.

Operating in the intensity of the sporting sector as a former professional rugby player and predominantly as a CEO of two clubs provided a unique insight into how to process criticism.

Being decisive is essential whilst accepting that not every decision will be the right one.

There will always be ´Armchair Quarterbacks´ people with solutions for every problem but always with the benefit of hindsight.

Do not take criticism personally from people that do not know you personally.

Critical to seek self validation as opposed to external validation.
