February 2019. I pulled off Route 66 outside Holbrook, Arizona, at a place called the Desert Star Motel. The sign flickered, the vacancy light buzzed, and the night clerk behind the bulletproof glass had a story he needed to tell. He was pale, twitchy, and he kept glancing at the hallway behind him. He said the same man had checked in three nights in a row — same name, same room, same time — but the door was always locked from the inside, and no one ever came out. He showed me the register, the worn pages, the signatures that looked exactly alike. He asked me to stay in Room 7 and listen. This episode is about what I heard through that wall, and what I saw when I finally looked through the peephole.
