The Long Island Serial Murders began in 1993 with the murder of Rita Tangredi, followed by the murders of Sandra Castilla, and Colleen McNamee in 1993 and 1994. Jane Doe #7 was discovered in 1996, followed by Jane Doe #3 (Peaches), in 1997. Two torsos were found in 2000, and 2003 - and after that, it all went silent... until the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert in 2010.

While Shannan’s death remains a mystery, her legacy goes beyond her fate. Shannan’s disappearance reignited public interest in the unsolved Long Island Serial Murder cases, and set in motion a chain of events that led to the discovery of additional victims, including the four women who became known as The Gilgo Four - Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Amber Costello. A new task force was formed in March, 2022, which led to the to the arrest of Rex Heuermann on Thursday, July 13th, 2023.
