Ever the storyteller, Aaron has a specific tipping story that has helped shaped many of the other aspects of what it takes to have decades worth of business under his belt, but this isn’t an easy topic for Aaron to share.

Living the American Dream

Back in 2002, Aaron was living the American Dream with holidays at the new family beach house and enjoying the success of business. And then he got a phone call from the IRS. Is it possible to take something surrounded by negativity and make it a positive strength to learn from in life?

While answering questions on a person that Aaron had had multiple interactions with, the American Dream begin to show some cracks as the IRS kept telling him that he should be careful with whom he does business with.

Worried, Aaron contacted a criminal defense lawyer whom stated that everything should all blow over soon. Only it didn’t; Aaron was indicted a few months later for conspiracy. He was blamed for something that he should have known, and realized that you can’t win going against the IRS. At the end of the day, a plea bargain was stated and 14 months and 1 week later, he was released from federal prison.

Plowing the Toughest Row

Now, nearly a decade later, he marks experiences in his life as pre-jail or post-jail because it was such a pivotal row to plow in his allegorical field of life which before had consisted of rows of good deeds as a straight-laced Eagle Scout, returned LDS missionary that was faithful to his wife and good to his family and friends.

A lesson that Aaron’s father taught him early on in life was that “It’s more important to be trusted than to be loved.” Aaron’s integrity is the very core of who he is, so serving time in federal prison made him question all that defined him before would now come crashing down. Worried, he pictured not being allowed in business circles after decades of entrepreneurship, because who he had thought he was no longer had the shiny, perfect badge of honor that straight-laced fellow was before jail.

Life’s crucibles can lead to brighter things…if we move forward

The thing that Aaron thought would have destroyed everything he had known ended up becoming a crucible that made sacred his marriage and given his children grit while in their youth. His family worked as a team and kept loving and supporting each other having going through hell and finding strength because of it.

Life is now bigger and brighter and more interesting. He didn’t lose any of his employees or clients. He didn’t lose the love and respect of close family friends; instead, they rallied together. His success is bigger than ever before and taught him lessons that have shaped him as an individual. Aaron believes that because he tried his whole life to be honest and do the right thing, that’s what kept people true.

The most important thing you have is your integrity and reputation. It’s not just saying a lot of great stuff, but SHOWING through example what you believe. You CAN go through difficult things and survive them. For Aaron, it was prison.

The world is a bright place and no matter what plot twists there are in our story, we are the authors and can decide what will define us.

Sometimes the most unlikely places will teach us the most important lessons. Such was the case for Aaron with his baby goats.

While looking at the farm life outside of his window on today’s podcast, Aaron reflects about the expectation the nanny goats have for their newborn babies to get on their feet during the first hour of life to suckle.

Before going off on too much farm talk, Aaron explains that this gives us an interesting life lesson that we have to get up and get going in order to become what we intend to be. So how do you work smarter instead of harder to become the captain of the ship instead of one of the deckhands?

It starts by getting up and getting started. First off, it’s a fallacy thinking that success only comes under the right circumstances with the right business person. Numbered below Aaron has a list of what helps bring success to fruition:

* Write your vision statement, the more specific the better

* Begin to take little baby steps towards your goal

* Start talking about it and telling people that you’re looking for opportunities

These simple steps can be achieved by anybody. It’s the ambition and knowing what needs to be done as well as where to stop. When we see the success, sometimes we end up kicking ourselves for avoiding opportunities because of fear or lack of understanding and realizing that it should have been done years ago!

Be curious. Next, make a decision as to what your outcome is going to be, then start taking baby steps towards it and educate yourself so that you can have a conversation with the right person to help you meet your goal.

When you take an opportunity to try something, you may mess up, so when those situations arise (and they will) don’t ignore it nor should you run away from it, but instead lean in to the situation and maybe look at it from a different angle.

To paraphrase Bruce Lee, some targets are only meant to be aimed at, and not to be hit. For Aaron, this means that by starting it up and moving towards that goal, we may receive another goal. In other words, we may get a slightly different outcome then what we initially imagined, but oftentimes that unseen outcome is even better than what we first started out for.

So how did he get there? It wasn’t because he was something extraordinary, it’s because he started moving and got educated that put him ahead of others. According to his own mentor, if you’re standing in line, you’re probably in the wrong place. If you want to make a difference, just start and get moving. There is always someone there to mentor and coach you, but YOU have to be the one to get up and start to work toward your goal.

If you want to make a difference, just start and get moving. There is always someone there to mentor and coach you, but YOU have to be the one to get up and start to work toward...

True or False?

To effectively manage a business, you must be right there overseeing it all otherwise it will fall apart. After all, you’re the one in charge right? False. Trust in others’ to complete and even exemplify their role is key to running a business, not micromanaging.

How does Aaron run his Reno, NV business from afar?

To grow a business, you’ve got to have people whom you trust to magnify the company and make it better on their watch. They want the company to do well, just as you do. Surround yourself with good people.

Aaron heard a story from a 747 pilot about instructions. Notwithstanding all of that planning and preparation, the pilot had 100% authority to keep that aircraft safe. He had all the power to solve the problem, much as managing a business and people.

Have good people and leave a detailed plan with them of your expectations. Take a proactive responsibility in teaching your employees on what their job expectations are and aren’t. Then, you’ll want to be able to give your employees within those lines their freedom to enhance their job. Most of the time your employees will know the best way how to help the client in the most effective way.

When you don’t let somebody make a decision, especially not knowing the job, they’ll often make a very poor, stupid decision. Trust your employees, and if they make a mistake, help redirect them. Most employees fail because they haven’t had a strong leader guiding them along the way. It’s broken down into an acronym DGRAC Act in the “Lesson of the Day.”

Sometimes the only person standing in your way for success is yourself. Do you have the audacity to move our of your way?

To get past the gatekeepers and through the doors of barriers, Aaron has some steps to consider as you advance confidently in your dreams.

As a part of Laughlin Assoc International with Mossimo Penco in Rome, Aaron ate at a restaurant and park up against an ancient Roman wall. They tried to open the old door, which was locked. Like  a speakeasy from Prohibition, they finally got in.

Aaron describes in vivid detail the scene of the restaurant where he ate an amazing meal at the same time as the Prince of Jordan and entourage that evening. Sometimes it has nothing to do with how much money you have, but who you know.

That’s one way to get through the door. Another way is during the most unexpected of times. In Pocatello, Idaho of 1986 Aaron met his wife for the first time face to face while she’s experiencing an allergy attack. He needed to achieve something, knocked on a door, and presented his need. Fortunately there was a great person on the other end that was able to help and she received medication

Have a clear goal. You’ve got to be able to clearly articulate your vision/goal. If you want to be taken seriously, first thing you do is write it out and be ready. Lack of preparation will ooze out of you just as readily as confidence will.

Believe it’s true. Your subconscious does not know the difference between conscience and reality. You’ve got to do the work and get yourself ready, which then gets you into that worthiness phase. Believe your beliefs and doubt your doubts. Show gratitude.

Then start over.

As a freshman in college (incidentally the ONLY year Aaron was in college!) he was short on funds for Christmas gifts, so he looked into ways to make money. This recycling business and Thoreau quote taught Aaron an incredible lesson that lead him into a lifetime of entrepreneurship.

It was a great experience in seeing a business that didn’t exist turn into a business that made thousands of dollars a month. When you get some initiative and look for some niche that is needed, you will find success. Doing something that doesn’t always make a lot of sense to others yet is clear to you takes courage. Even if it comes naturally in your mind of the big picture, others may not understand nor will they comprehend your vision. It’s when you put it into action and then show results that those doubters can then see.

Don’t fear your own brilliance and ability to succeed. Whatever your dream is, aim high, write it down, articulate your dream to people as you meet them. The more specific you are with your dream, it’s critical that you advance confidently in the direction of your dreams and you end up living a life that is at a higher level. It’s just the way that it works. Know what you want, figure it out in exquisite detail. Make the dream come true on paper and then proceed forward. It works.Every.Single.Time!

What lessons do we learn to understand the importance of quantity over quality, being honest with what our strengths and weaknesses are, and how to become successful once this discovery is made? For Aaron, the answer was in a pair of spurs.

While recently traveling through Elko, Nevada for the National Cowboy Poetry Readings, Aaron discovered gear for horseback trail riding (which is his love) in the tourist section of the town. Living within the shadow of the Grand Tetons myself, Jackson Hole Wyoming is less than a few hours away from my house, so I am very familiar with Western Tourist traps. One lesson I learn is that if the locals are wearing products from the store, you know you’re in the right place! Such was the case for Aaron at Capriola’s in Elko discovering beautifully detailed silver spurs.

A part of the vaquero spirit is having the right gear. Not only should it be quality, but look like quality riders. Spurs are not intended to hurt the horse, but are designed as a tool to give the horse cues. The ‘jingle bobs’ that Aaron rattles on the podcast are today’s featured image giving us an audio example of what quality literally sounds like.

So ask yourself, what “certificates of authenticity” to you have in your life? In other words, what items do you focus on the quality that brings you joy, drive and fulfillment in your work? Surround yourself with people that challenge you and encourage you to become better. Know what you’re great at. What do you struggle with? Stop that, and do what you’re great at. Own it. If there’s other stuff that you need and you know you’re not good at it, get someone on your team that IS allow them to share that greatness. Get people who PLAY at the things you have to work at. Surround yourself with it and your client will be given a great product and service.

At the age of 94, Natalie’s Grandpa is still just as much a cowboy as he was as a child growing up in the 1920s. One time while tying a quilt for one of her children with her Grandma (8 years her grandfather’s junior but more active than most middle-aged women!), Grandpa pulled up a chair next to the quilt and read some poems he had been collecting about cowboys.

While in Nassau, Bahamas, Aaron wanted to go beyond the touristy places and went to a bat cave. Within a few steps he was in this natural cathedral of bats (not touristy, but definitely unique!). By going off the beaten path, he had a unique experience.

Near the end of the event he attended in the Bahamas Aaron met a man that thought outside of the box in the business world and was tremendously successful in large corporations because of it. He had figured out a way to not go with the norm, so Aaron asked him what his key to success was.

In Portland there are some unique points that require outside of the box thinking that help preserve a natural habitat between Wallace Park and Chapman Elementary School. The school has a gigantic smokestack that has been preserved as a nesting place for swifts, providing a unique scene for anyone watching.

Have you ever been behind the scenes of something that appeared so perfect and fluent only to discover that a lot of chaos occurs behind or below the scenes to make that appearance flow? Such was the case for Aaron while visiting the underbelly of a famous museum in London and a gourmet kitchen of a world-renowned chef right near his home.

While on a speaking venue in London, England, Aaron was able to enjoy some amazing views from his hotel room and was able to meet the curator of the Natural History Museum there in London. He was taken into the bowels of the museum where he learned that what is behind the scenes is just as important as what is presented to the public.

Aaron still hasn’t seen any of the actual exhibits of the Natural History Museum, but instead got to go underground and see artifacts, including the opportunity to hold mummified cats, one of which was 3500 years old. This experience below ground showed him that there was a huge wealth of artifacts stored behind the scenes that had nothing to do with what the public sees, yet is taken out little by little to remain in motion with public appeal.

Isn’t that how we tend to present ourselves in business and life? We offer a certain presentation of the best parts of ourselves, yet a lot of the times the realities of the business or relationships don’t get presented in public. It can be chaotic behind the scenes, like a gourmet kitchen while what is presented is calm and elegant to the diners.

It’s so important as an entrepreneur to not get down in the mouth by comparing all of you with the perfect presentation of somebody else. They are NOT the same. Everybody has to go through challenges to achieve success.

Falling, especially if done voluntarily like bungee jumping or rappelling off of the side of a cliff, is a lot like purchasing real estate. It takes courage and will cause you to see things from a completely different perspective!

A couple of years ago Aaron went coast to coast in Costa Rica for 10 days. His group visited an active volcano and did some hiking and rappelling. After a few small rappels, they hooked Aaron onto a rope to go down a Cliffside nearly 300 feet tall. There was a moment of truth where he pushed himself up along a waterfall. It was scary, but once he took that leap of faith, it was such a liberating feeling to be moving fast along the water fall, taking big strides. What is it that we fear so much that we are too scared to take a leap of faith that prevents us from a fantastic experience. What is the fear that prevents us from clipping on and living life?

Aaron’s first real estate gig reminded him of this which was extremely successful, but required taking a leap of faith. So what is the lesson? You need to have a plan. You need the right stuff in order to be successful. A lot of it is attitude, because you may have all the right items and be surrounded by the right people, but only YOU can make the jump.

Having these different dots of experience can help you connect ways to make your own picture of success. It’s one step, one experience at a time. You need to take risk, have a plan, and take the jump.

Have you ever eaten a lemon, expecting it to be the typical tart and instead bite into something sweet? For Aaron, it was an explosion to the brain that by taking a lemon from a tree he would have an experience like that while traveling throughout Southern Spain. How many times is something presented in our life that makes us uncomfortable because it is the unknown? What happens when you are willing to venture outside of your comfort zone? Well, that’s entirely up to the individual.

As we venture into the unknown and deal with something that is right in front of us, even if it makes us uncomfortable with the possibility of making life worse, how many opportunities are then lost to make life incredible?

When we start to stay where it’s comfortable and predictable, but then we miss out on an amazing experience, as Aaron stated “Isn’t it a shame?”  When we don’t want to try something because of the possibility of not liking it or being too far out of our element, we miss out on new possibilities.

It’s so critical to get out of our rut and try new things. So instead of remaining comfortable, block out a time each week to take yourself on a date. Allow it to be spontaneous and let your imagination take you somewhere so that you can have a freeing experience. Aaron experienced this with an out of the box doughnut shop full of crazy creations in Portland.

Sometimes being willing to try a new food is the push we need to get us to venture outside of our box and realize that some boxes come in many different shapes, colors, sizes, or are completely transparent. We’ll never know until we take the plunge.
