The Lord of Ashes

raiders start sinking the clans' convoys, he asks for riders, and he gets them. At the elven city of Quenthis, the ambush is waiting.

His dragon dies in the shallows. His clan raises a cairn for him. But Aolun is not dead. He is taken, tortured and sold south down the Wake Isles into Vestria, a land that does not believe dragons are real.

Vestria has troubles of its own. The harvests have failed, the granaries are emptying, and sensible men are selling grain dear. Across the isles, the elves are rising against a century of tribute and taken children. And in a slave pen in a free harbor, the boy who once flew is learning to be silent.

Every loss takes something warm out of him. The world will get back what is left.
