In 2018, an online mob attempted to cancel the poet Joseph Massey’s existence, spreading rumours and allegations against him to friends, strangers and employers, damaging his livelihood and his mental health. To our collective fortune, Joseph is still working, still writing, working to rebuild his life. He generously shared his time with us to speak about the experience of public shaming, the politicization of America’s creative writing programs, and the power of words to both hurt and heal.
