DJ’s J-Red & Mathmatics, two of the coolest Star Wars geeks in the universe join us on the show to discuss the undisputed 1978 original Christmas classic: The Star Wars Holiday Special (the film that George Lucas has disowned). Prepare to relive the horrors of your childhood, when you first saw Mark Hamil with a bowl haircut, a contractually obligated Harrison Ford dragged from his trailer and Carrie Fisher sing to the tune of the Star Wars Theme. It’s a Christmas Eve special edition of The Low End Theory and it’ll be as bad, if not worse, than all that you can imagine.

 

 

We were joined by legendary Australian duo Paris & Peril for an in-depth look into the history of hiphop in Oceania. In case you were unaware, these two got their start back in the mid-1980’s as two of the original B-Boy graffiti artists doing pieces on the train lines, running from the police and dodging rivals as members of Australia’s most legendary graf crew, DMA. Of course, they would then move into large-scale inner-city work as Claim To Fame and would catch the attention of national TV stations and their audiences. Later on, Peril would gain further notoriety as one of Australia’s top hiphop DJ’s, running his own nights for 20+ years and gaining national fame with his group 1200 Techniques winning ARIA awards and playing some massive gigs. We go deep into conversation about all this and more, plus we drop a stack of golden era sounds to make this show a block party special.

This week, Shan and OB are joined by the undisputed kings of block rockin’ 45’s, Marc Hype and Naughty NMX. If you’re even remotely into the little records with big sounds, then you’d know these boys absolutely rule the scene with their German label Dusty Donuts releasing one bomb 45 after the other over the past 7 years. We get to the bottom of their love affair with 7’s, where the lads got their inspiration from, what it was like producing drum’n’bass back in the day, winning ITF comps, being drip fed hiphop at a young age during the Cold War and recording mixtapes with Z-Trip (yep, we go there).

All this and 3 sets of strictly Dusty Donuts (and related) 45’s get dropped exclusively by OB and anyone who knows the label will know these are usually only heard on dance floors (nothing digital in sight). So make sure to tune in for what is going to be a huge show of hiphop, funk and party 45’s, quality banter and plenty of background you’ve probably never heard before.

This week, we have the super-eclectic, multi-instrumentalist and all-round top bloke, Flevans, in to wax lyrical with Shan & OB. This highly respected producer got his start on Tru Thoughts way back in the early 2000’s off the strength of his 4-track recorded tapes and he has never looked back with album after album of pure gold. Now signed to Jalapeno Records, he released the critically acclaimed album, Mr Right, in 2019 and has just dropped a new EP, I’m Over Here, this past month that is pure nu-disco/boogie perfection.

All this and we drop plenty of new jams before our famous ‘Booty Call’ segment returns, plus we’re back to doing what we do best with our infamous Battle of the Blends.

Shan & OB

This week, Shan and OB are joined by the legendary Resin Dogs (out of Brisbane, Australia). Since the mid-90’s, this crazy collective has been releasing quality slices of b-boy/b-girl hiphop, funk, groove, soul and boogie-vibed gold to create all forms of dance sounds. Their label Hydrofunk has also been home to quite an assortment of Australian beat producers and the like over the long haul and they’ve just re-released a 20-year anniversary edition of their genre-defying album, Grand Theft Audio, that sounds as fresh today as it did the day it came out.

The boys chat to Katch & Dave about what it was like touring with Black Eyed Peas, world tours playing sold out festivals and recording with cats like Robert Reed (Trouble Funk), The Pharcyde, Jungle Brothers and Kenny Dope.

All this and the boys drop a stack of new and not so new releases from the likes of Ghostface Killa, Rare Earth, Chromeo, Arthur Conley, Rayko, Krafty Kuts, Boca 45, Flevans and Lexsoul Dancemachine and a new jam from friend of the show, MaxxxyT. All this and, you heard it here first, we premiere the brand new 45 from UK heavyweights, The Allergies.

This week, Shan and OB are joined on the show by Melbourne’s, Monkey Marc. You may know this longtime reggae/dancehall producer from his early work with Combat Wombat, his internationally recognized solar powered recording studio, the fact he throws renegade protest parties that support Aboriginal rights (and the fight against the exploitation of natural resources) all whilst using his mobile solar powered sound system and the fact that he gets to these rallies using a vegetable oil powered van. Yep, you read all that correct.

When not doing all that, he’s running workshops in the middle of the Australian outback for indigenous communities, sharing the power of music. Speaking of music, he’s just released his new album, Vital Sound, on his Digikillaz label and its chock a block full of the best reggae/dancehall singers, lyricists and rappers over his slick productions.

Marc chats to the boys about what it was like working with superstar Capleton in Jamaica whilst surrounded in what can only be described as a “party circle”. All this and the boys drop a stack of new and not so new releases from the likes of Slick Walk, Pitchcaps, The Ruffnuts, Krafty Kuts and the brand new 45 from Groovescooter Records, OYOBI’s, “Don’t Let It Go To Your Head”.

This week, we welcome a legend onto the show with DJ Vadim in to chat about his long career and reputation as one of the world’s top independent producers, performers and all-round purveyor of all that is good about music.

Dubbed as the “John Coltrane of hip hop”, Vadim has become well respected as an innovator in a number of areas during his career, from starting his own label Jazz Fudge in 1994 before being snapped up by Ninja Tune soon after and releasing quality album after album that have been staples ever since. As always, there is plenty of banter and enough shenanigans to make you laugh (or cry).

It’s an “all Boca” show as the original master of the 7 inch, one half of Dynamo Productions and all-round party rocking (and in-demand) DJ, Boca 45, is our special guest on this week’s episode of The Low End Theory. Seriously, Scott Hendy has had his hands in just about anything and everything beat related since his first album, Pitch Sounds, dropped on Grand Central Records back in 2004 and this Bristol native is showing no signs of slowing down.

With his 4th album, Forty Five, dominating club DJ playlists last year and a 5th album just released called ‘Donuts’ (featuring a stack of his ultra-limited 45’s that you either bought immediately or missed out on), Boca lets us all in on what it’s been like producing and releasing records during these crazy times, what it was like coming up through the 90’s amongst a creative explosion in Bristol and also about that time he showed up The 45 King at a gig (yep, that really happened). He also gives the boys an exclusive 45’s mix (yep, only here) and, as always, Shan and OB bring their usual banter over plenty of Boca 45 and Dynamo Productions beats, breaks n party hiphop.

We also chat about the brand new Boca 45 album 2020 Donuts, a collection of all the limited edition 45’s that he has released this year. For the first time you can now have the entire collection pressed in this small run of records. It’s definitely a release that we wasted no time on snatching up for our own collections. Professor Daddy O (of legendary supergroup Stetsasonic) stops in to The Low End Theory this week. As a major label record executive and producer after years working with hiphop icon Prince Paul on the seminal Stetsasonic releases in the late 80’s-early 90’s, Daddy O was behind plenty of hits for acts like Mary J Blige, Big Daddy Kane, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Queen Latifah. He’s also put out a stack of great solo material so he chats to us about his latest album, G.O.A.T. Antidote, on Chuck D’s label Spit Slam and also gives us the scoop on the banging new 45 that Stetsasonic just dropped on the Origu label, “LOVE”. Is a reunion next? Listen up to find out.
