November 12, 2024 ~ Lucy Ann Lance talks with Dr. Eric Olson, Associate Professor, Michigan State University Wheat Breeding & Genetics, Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences. In 1878, a schooner carrying rye seeds sank in Lake Huron, preserving its cargo underwater for 146 years. Recently recovered, these seeds are now at Michigan State University (MSU). Researchers at MSU, led by Eric Olson, have isolated DNA from the seeds and plan to sequence the genome, setting the stage for future genome engineering projects. The extraction process involved pulverizing 288 seeds and using modern chemistry to isolate DNA, which is unique to these seeds.
