German watchmaking art, the slogan found on the Glashutte Original website, is an apt description
for their watches. As a brand with German watchmaking roots going back to the year 1845, they
have carried on the art of Saxon watchmaking for 175 years, and yes art it is. If you take a look at
their movements, like the calibre 39-11 found in this SeaQ, which is unfortunately hidden behind a
closed case back, and you will see a level of artistry that you don’t find in many similarly priced
The SeaQ is available in a few different variations including the model we have here today as well
as the Panorama Date version and the SeaQ 1969 edition. The Panorama Date model comes in at
a larger size, at a hair over 43mm in diameter, which will work well for those people with a larger
wrist, but the model we have here has a smaller overall footprint. This version of the SeaQ has a
diameter of 39.5mm with a wingspan measuring 47mm top to bottom from lug tip to lug tip. This
model is also quite a bitmore slender, with an overall thickness of just over 12mm, compared to
the greater than 15.5mm thickness of the larger Panorama Date model.
The price of the SeaQ model on metal bracelet we’re looking at here today has a manufacturer’s
suggested retail price of $9900 USD, which is also in contrast to the Panorama Date variation,
coming in at $12,400 dollars.
The stainless steel case of this model lacks the crown guards as found on some of the other
variations of the SeaQ and has a mixture of nicely done polished and satin brushed surface
finishing. The stainless steel bracelet also has a mixed finish with polished center links and
matching satin brushed outer links to either side, but more on the bracelet later.
As it is a dive watch you have a number of the expected features that come along with this genre
of watch, which include a coin edged unidirectional elapsed time bezel, a screw down oversized
signed crown, closed case back and 200m of water resistance.
The dial, handset, and zero marker on the bezel are all filled with bright and long lasting glow in the
dark super luminova and offer the viewer a clear and legible view of the time in any lighting
condition. Speaking of the dial the SeaQ has a Galvanic Black dial with sunray finish, a finishing
process that should in theory preserve the appearance of the dial and resist the aging effects of
UV light such as fading over time.
The vintage influence of the dials 1969 inspired design is evident in the choice of type face and
layout, as well as with the off white to tan colored super luminova fill on the indexes and handset.
The ceramic bezel insert and the graduations and markers are modern manufacture quality but
also have a throwback inspired presentation. The high polished broad arrow minutes hand, as well
beckons the influences of the Spezimatic dive watch from which this model pays homage to. Of
course at the 3 o’clock position on the dial we have a framed quickset date and there is the printed
branding both above and below the central stack of the handset.
Protecting the dial is a domed sapphire crystal that when viewed from an angle gives a look that is
similar to that of a vintage plexiglass crystal, but with the robust scratch resistance of modern
