We're not historians but we DID read the source document so, by-golly, we're gonna tell you what we thought about it. The Malleus Maleficarum was the creation of a frustrated Dominican priest who, upset that he was unable to persecute women the way he wanted, retired to write the Malleus and lobby for official papal recognition of the witchcraft problem. In short; this snowballed to create a legacy of witch burning and persecuting the innocent that would spread, as madness does, cropping up here and there, for hundreds of years - always with the Malleus Maleficarum as its justification.
