In 2006, Matt traveled to the historic St. James Hotel in Cimarron, New Mexico, determined to investigate its most infamous space—Room 18. Locked and off-limits at the time, he photographed what he could and assumed that if he captured anything, it would be there. It wasn’t.

Days later, while reviewing his photos at home, he noticed something in an image taken outside Room Five—a room with no particular reputation. Above the door, in the closed transom window, appeared a translucent, perfectly symmetrical face staring back at him.

Years later, during a return visit, his wife heard footsteps cross the wooden floor of their room in the middle of the night.

Room 18 may get the headlines. But something else may be watching.
