Dr. Darnell Leatherwood is an educator and community servant based in the south side of Chicago currently serving as faculty at the University of Chicago. He is one of the nation's leading experts on educating young black men. Community service, mentoring, and initiative are hallmarks that have shaped his vision for civic leadership and public action.
Affordable housing and employment challenges in the underserved urban communities of Chicago and East Saint Louis, Illinois drove the development of Leatherwood & Lyles, L.L.C., which aims to provide affordable housing options and employment opportunities to historically disenfranchised individuals. As the founder of Black Boys Shine, Darnell has initiated taking responsibility for reconstructing the narrative and illuminating the character and contributions of Black boys and men who are positively shaping their communities and the world. Within the Black Male Educators Alliance of Illinois, Darnell has advocated for the recruitment, retention, and development of Black male educators. He has mentored at juvenile detention centers, schools across the Southside of Chicago, universities, and national organizations such as the Habitat 4 Humanity and Don Mayer Boys and Girls Club.
Darnell has served on task forces and boards such as: The Journal of Negro Education (Young Scholars), Thrive Chicago’s & President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance Action Team, SwaTaleem Foundation, University of Chicago MAPSS Alumni Association, Chicago State University (College of Education), For Posterity, Inc., and QUEST.
