Starting a business in Sacramento has become easier with entrepreneurs having access to multiple programs and resources. Building and scaling that business is still hard. In addition to raising capital, which is a challenge, founders also need support in finding customers and building operational capacity. 

In this episode, I am joined by Steve Boyle, Founder, and CEO of Essential Aero, and Rick Spencer, VP of HaneyBiz and co-developer of The Sacramento Growth Factory (SGF). We explore how Essential Aero has benefited from SGF, and how the experience is different from other business-building efforts Steve has had in Sacramento. We also dive into why Sacramento is so well-positioned to be a great testbed for companies like Essential Aero, especially in establishing a Center of Excellence for aviation safety, operations, and developing infrastructure for Urban Air Mobility.

 Margaret and I talk about the important work that NAWBO is doing in connecting, promoting, educating, and supporting women entrepreneurs. She’ll share a little about her own journey and talk about how empowering female founders and leaders results in communities that prosper and thrive.   

We will also tackle the effects that the global COVID-19 pandemic has had on women in business who have faced additional and disproportionate challenges of managing childcare and school from home. We’ll get Margaret’s perspective on that as well.

Sacramento has come a long way from relying primarily on government jobs to drive the economy and is beginning to gain recognition for key accomplishments in both the public and private sectors. Can you use your mission to create a better world?

I often talk about Rockstar Entrepreneurs. As far as legends go, Elon Musk is at the top of the mountain for Entrepreneurs. So, it often surprises many people to learn that he wasn’t the Founder of Tesla. In fact, he was their fourth CEO.  

In this episode, we meet Marc Tarpenning, co-founder of Tesla, and Venture Partner at Spero Ventures. Marc takes us through the early days of Tesla, and shares some of the key lessons on the importance of co-founders, getting feedback from investors, and how he defines success (and it is not money), including how Marc is working on making a better world by investing in companies who are aligned with his personal mission.  

We also talk about how COVID has introduced an opportunity for entrepreneurs to raise money and NOT be in Silicon Valley, and how to tie your mission focus with your investment pitch. With all the challenges of this year, we can tend to overlook progress. For most businesses in the US, leaders are taking a hard look at their diversity shortcomings, and why making diversity part of their strategy is good for business. 2020 has turned into a year of crisis and hardship for many. When it seemed that we couldn’t take any more, our state was engulfed in historic wildfires. Whether we are dealing with a pandemic, social injustice, or disaster like wildfire, it can be hard for young people to imagine a world that is getting better. However, from ashes, something new can grow, if we build it right. 

In this episode I am excited to talk to Dr. Gina Warren about how young entrepreneurs can create a better world and specifically how she is inspiring the youth in the inner city to begin their entrepreneurial journey.  Dr. Warren is a co-founder and executive director of the Neighborhood Wellness Foundation.  We discuss how growing up locally in the Sacramento area inspired her to become involved with the community programs and activities she is currently supporting, and how you can help make a difference with the entrepreneurs of the future.
