We, as parents, will need to have some tough talks with our kids.Ā These tough talks do not have to be difficult.Ā We start with a question, listen to our child's response.Ā Then we offer support.Ā Use words that invite conversation and allow our children to feel our care, concern, and love for them.Ā This is relational parenting.

Parents, we need to remember that love is an action, not just a feeling.Ā When we act with love to our kids, they feel loved.Ā Just saying the words is not enough.Ā Our actions need to speak love or our children do not feel loved.Ā When you are yelling, demanding, controlling, and punishing, you are not acting in love with your children.Ā All our actions need to speak love.Ā Then our children feel loved, secure, safe, and connected to us.Ā This is how we build healthy relationships with our children.Ā Let's explore the 5 Love Languages of Children to learn how to act in loving ways to our kids.
My cousin and I grew up similarly as our moms are sisters and both parented us in the same way.Ā The control from our moms in our childhoods affected our adult lives and my cousin explains in detail how this affected her marriage and changed how she raised her three boys once she realized she did not want to repeat the pain she experienced with her own children.

So many times we get stuck in believing our negative, fear-based thoughts.Ā But the real lesson is to learn that our thoughts are not real and we can change them at any moment.Ā We must learn how to change our disempowering thoughts into strength based, empowering thoughts.Ā Then we can teach this to our children.Ā This will make the difference in their lives.

This is the story of how I confronted my mom with my childhood pain story so that I could have a voice and share what my experience as a child was.Ā When we are ready to confront the people who may have hurt us, then we can release the pain and move forward to live more empowered lives.

When we have childhood pain, we were not role modelled healthy relationships in our home lives so we need to learn this.Ā When we know what healthy relationships are, we can teach this to our children.Ā The key is that healthy relationships feel good and unhealthy relationships feel bad.Ā Our feelings will tell us if we are modelling healthy or unhealthy relationships.Ā Let's model healthy relationships with our kids.

Is punishment your way of correcting your child's behaviour?Ā Punishment does damage to our kids.Ā As a High School Counsellor, I have many conversations with my teenage students about how punishment has affected their feelings about themselves.Ā Punishment changes how a child feels about him/herself.Ā It damages our children internally and they carry this pain into their adult lives.Ā Learn a new way to change our kids' behaviour.

How do you know we are still carrying childhood pain?Ā You tell your childhood story.Ā Then you begin to become aware when your pain is showing up in your life and in your parenting.Ā When you become more aware, you can change how you parent and begin to heal that pain.

This is the story about how the Masterful Parenting Program began.Ā It all started with a dinner party with friends sharing about our childhood pain and how this experience impacted our lives.Ā In the end, we all were determined not to repeat the trauma, neglect, abuse with our own children but instead we would be committed to healing and change our parenting so our kids would be healthy and thrive.
