  • Are you too busy to worship God- Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
We may feel that work, studies, family, parents, and all the things we need to do, are unduly stealing our time and we are too busy to worship God. In this week's Friday Reminder, Shaykh Faraz beautifully shows us how this is simply not true and that Islam encompasses rewards, and honors all of these endeavors. It is simply about what resides in the heart - our intentions.

There is profound power in our intentions to transform everything we do into a means of traveling closer to God. Shaykh Faraz counsels us that there are three core intentions of the Muslim. One of them is to fulfill a communal obligation. Your work, whatever it is, is helping people and helping society. Whether you sweep the roads, take the calls, see the patients, teach the students or stack the shelves.

You are directly or indirectly fulfilling a human need. So consider that and intend what you do for God. When you leave your home to travel to work... don’t! Leave your home to travel to God. Watch the reminder to find out what the other two intentions are, so you too can transform the mere mundane into the super sacred and feel a deep peace and joy that you are always traveling to God in all that you do.

  • 21- Virtues and Importance of the Prayer -The Masters and Millennials: Challenges in Living the Way of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him)- Shaykh Abdurragmaan Khan

In this episode, Shaykh Abdurragmaan Khan continues in the text, covering the virtue of prayer. He explains how the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) was concerned with his relationship with Allah above all else, and the Journey of Isra’ and Mi’raj, where the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) meets Allah Most High, came as a result of his steadfastness and patience in the face of numerous hardships. The pure joy experienced in this state remained with our Prophet during his prayers. Prayer is our safe-haven in moments of sadness and grief, and we should always return to it. May Allah make our prayers the coolness of our eyes and the contentment of our hearts.

  • Gratitude is the Best Attitude- Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
We are often blind to the blessings that God rains down upon us in our daily lives. And so we wrongly attribute our talents and blessings to our own efforts and blame our hardships on the failures and shortcomings of others. This leads the human being into a state of complaint (shakwa). And for the one who complains much, God will give them much more to complain about.

As for the one who recognizes who they really are, they see everything as a freely given gift by God and so enter into a state of complete gratitude (shukr). And for the one that is grateful, God will them much more to be grateful for. “If you show gratitude, I will increase you” (Quran 14:7).

In this week’s Friday Reminder, Shaykh Yusuf Weltch discusses the importance of being in a permanent and active state of gratitude and how we can all learn to arrive at such a state through deep and honest reflection upon our blessings. The prize? A heart at peace through closeness to God.

  • 20- Virtues in the Call to Prayer -The Masters and Millennials: Challenges in Living the Way of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him)- Shaykh Abdurragmaan Khan

In this episode of Masters and Millennials, Shaykh Abdurragmaan Khan covers the virtues of the Call to Prayer (Adhan), the recommended times to sound it, and some of the rulings regarding it. He highlights how the Call to Prayer is a means to Allah’s pleasure, removing His anger, saving us from punishment, attracting good circumstances, and chasing Shaytan away. He encourages, as the scholars have, establishing as a practice, sounding the Call to Prayer on occasions other than for the daily prayer such as at the time of anger, when children are troubled by jinn, when a house is burning, and for safety when the traveler leaves his home. He also talks about some of the rulings regarding the Call to Prayer such as reciting it in our homes—especially now with many of us having to pray in our homes due to lockdown or restrictions—responding to the call of the one who calls to the prayer (mu’adhin) and the importance of the caller having a beautiful voice. He relates a touching incident where a young non-Muslim boy with a beautiful voice sought to mock the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) by calling the adhan and who the Holy Prophet made one of his callers to prayer.

To end, Shaykh Abdurragmaan says that while many of us may consider these actions to be of little significance, they hold much weight and are the building blocks of what makes us followers of the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace). By making these practices a habit in our lives, eventually we will find that more of the Sunna of the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) will be found within us and our homes.
