Thoughts from your host…
Welcome back to wherever you are!
Hiatus is over, a new season of shows has begun, and even though it’s been six weeks since the last full episode of this show, it almost feels as though it’s been six years!
So much has gone on…so much has changed…so many people have come and gone. So many movies have been seen – so many differing perspectives swirling around in my brain. Guess it’s high time I turn on my microphone and start the conversation anew, don’t you?
It’s fitting that this “Return Episode” drops on Thanksgiving Day, because I am deeply thankful for the guest featured on this show. Lisa is someone I feel truly lucky to know. She is inspiring in every sense of the word – a soul who continually burns at fourteen on a scale of one-to-ten. She is immensely talented, and a constant reminder that passions are worth pursuing. Whether she knows it or not, she has taught me a lot about what real strength is…and I’m furiously scribbling notes in the hopes of learning more.
Meanwhile, the show itself come back with a bit of a bang.
With Bradley Cooper remaking an iconic film, I thought it an opportune time to dig into an entire series of films for the first time in a few years. We got Judy, we got Babs, and we got GaGa. We have Swanees, Evergreens, and Shallows. We have some amazing performances and some really cheesy sequences…and damned near everything in-between!
So let us begin anew.
Pour yourself a cup of coffee, help yourself to a freshly-baked cookie, and listen to a lively conversation between two friends. Oh, and listen-up for a hit of Lisa’s vocal chops! And perhaps a teeny dose of your humble host’s too.

The Matineecast closes up shop at the 43rd annual Toronto International Film Festival by sitting down with family.
Taking part in these filmgoing shenanigans every autumn would probably feel isolating if my partner-in-crime didn’t partake with me. Even if we find ourselves running in opposite circles, there’s something special about knowing that it’s a common passion leading us around those circles.
If we sound weary…well…it’s because we are. Still though, TIFF is littered with moments like this where Lindsay and I catch-up with each other late at night or early in the morning, so if this podcast is all about sharing the festival experience, moments like these are very much part of it.
Give the cat a scratch behind the ears, and pull up a corner of the couch!

Back again! The Matineecast returns from the 43rd annual Toronto International Film Festival with a dear friend sitting down.
No rest for the weary as my festival ramps up over the final three days. So I shall leave the listening to you and get on my way to the AGO.
Apologies in advance as the cafe was a teeny bit louder on-mic than it seemed in-person, but I believe the show isn’t inaudible in any way.Tonight we discuss green vegetables, public v press screenings, and talking to filmmakers.
Don’t turn your nose up at the falafel, and pull up a chair!

We’re back! The Matineecast checks in again from the 43rd annual Toronto International Film Festival with another pair of first time guests.
During the festival, I happened upon a nifty local podcast called “We Really Like Her”…and I just had to reach out to its badass hosts and see if they’d join me to break bread (spoiler alert: they said yes). So to get another audio dispatch out into the world, I sit down in a somewhat crowded cafe with Danita Steiberg and Erica Gagne. Over an adult beverage or three, we meet face-to-face and catch up on the first week of fest-ing. I’m happy to report they live up to their show’s reputation and bring the goods!
Tonight we talk about feminism in film, being a good ally, and where we hope TIFF goes from here.
Don’t confuse The Rivoli with C’est What, and pull up a chair!

And we’re on the air! The Matineecast checks in from the 43rd annual Toronto International Film Festival with a first time guest.
To get the ball rolling, Raquel Stecher and I sit down in a rather noisy pub to finally meet face-to-face and catch up on the first three days of fest-ing. I’m happy to report she’s every bit the clever lass she comes across as on social media
Tonight we talk about rallies, screenings, and the festival from the POV of a first-timer!
Hope the server doesn’t mix-up your orders and pull up a chair!

Earlier this summer, I sat down to podcast. That might not sound like anything newsworthy after nearly ten years of “welcome to wherever you are”…but I assure you, this show was different.
There were no films to discuss, no plots to pick apart, no performances to laud or loathe. Instead, the topic of conversation was music…and, well…me.
My personal podcasting Yoda – Mister Jamie Dew – currently publishes a series of posts and podcasts surrounding mental health. A Show of Strength is home to his thoughts and expressions on all things surrounding mental wellness. If Dew’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he was the brains behind The Dew Over Podcast dedicated to revisiting past Oscar years (I did several guest spots on that show, if you recall).
Much as I love talking about film, and listening to film discussion – a Show of Strength has Dew podcasting on a much higher level; It’s more transcendent, and gives so much more back to the audience who care to stop by.
Where I entered into the fray is a sub-series Dew created titled “Songs of Strength“. For this set of discussions, guests sit down with the introspective host and discuss six-song-playlists that allow them respite from anxieties and depression.
I’d wager that nobody who frequents this site will be surprised to hear me talk about a love of music, but discussion of my own anxieties might seem like a whole other side of me…and, well…it is.
Most of the more personal bits are contained to the top of the show when Jamie Dew asks me to discuss my own inner workings, and if I sound nervous talking about that side of myself, that’s because I was.
Once that’s out of the way, we get to talk about music – about the songs that allow me catharsis, healing, strength, and grace in moments when such things seem hardest to find. There are stories about where I come from, and confessions about where I’d like to go. There’s memories and hopes. There’s two people helping each-other through.
The episode was recorded on a tough day at the beginning of the summer, meaning once again, something good was able to come from a moment where I felt lousy.
The episode can be heard here, I’m rather proud of it so I do hope you enjoy.
Edit 2021: With Mr Dew’s permission, I have embedded the original audio into the post below. My thanks to him for originally hosting these talks and for allowing me to share it with anyone who may be interested to hear it

Thoughts from your host…
My Saturday mornings on the balcony with my comic book have begun to feel chillier. My Sunday nights on the back porch of my childhood home too. Summer is ending, dear friends. The time of endless hours of fun is drawing to a close. We must all pack our things into the car, close the joint down for another season and go be grown-ups again.
It sounds sad, but really it’s a good thing. Autumn brings feelings of starting anew…like getting a jump on a new year before a new year actually begins.
Here on the show, we see summer out in subdued fashion. We are talking about a great selection to be sure, but if one were to listen to this show and compare it to the show that came before, one can hear the difference.
Two weeks ago, the party was still going strong…now it’s just a few of us in the kitchen…with softer music on the turntable, and entire legions of empties littering every surface. My guest on this episode was a perfect companion for the late summer chat, and I’m deeply grateful for his company.
I make mention of this on the show, but it bears repeating here:
I have had a blast in 2018 bringing on some of the warmest, smartest, most-engaging guests a podcaster could ever want. The sixteen episodes that make up this year’s feed are all ones I am deeply proud of, making the time and energy this show requires seem so very worthwhile. But it’s time for a short break. Not for long, just a teeny bit.
We’re calling this episode “The End of The Season” for The Matineecast, with no full episodes planned to drop again until at least the beginning of October. There will be a TIFF dispatch or three, but no full three-ring-circus until the leaves begin to change colour. September is always a push around this space, and it’s time I start pushing back.
So I hope you enjoy what you hear today. I hope you enjoy what you’ve heard this year. I truly hope your summer has been filled with joy and the stuff memories are made of. I sure as hell know mine has, and I’m deeply thankful for anytime you’ve plugged your earbuds in to let me talk about it.

Yep – that’s us! And you wonder why the eight graders in our classes weren’t nicer to us? Seriously – will we ever be this cool again?
The show notes for this episode are deliberately being kept brief, both because my guest and I do a lot of talking, and because is was a long several days to finally bring this episode to fruition. So please think about your younger selves – or someone you know who is STILL their younger self, and dig in!

Thoughts from your host…
It’s been a series of shorter episodes for much of this summer for a number of reasons. That’s a little counter to the norm, since they say over time people’s podcasts get longer, not shorter. This week though something swung the other way. Perhaps it was the guest being a third-timer, perhaps it was the fact that he’s a longtime friend of the show. Perhaps it’s because the film of the day is so damned bananas, or perhaps it’s just something in the water.
Whatever the reason, I hope you have a bit more time to spend with us this week – perhaps a transit delay on your commute, or a longer spreadsheet that needs tending to. Whatever the unforeseen circumstance, we got ya.
So start speaking in your white voice, and practice your soda can toss, – a new Matineecast is ready for your listening enjoyment.
