Thoughts from your host…
I do hope you’ll permit a shortened set of show notes for one-nine-seven. What I am short-changing you fine folks in thought and word, I hope I can make up for in links below.
You see today’s guest touched on a lot of bases during our breezy seventy-five minute conversation, and I felt it would be remiss not to give you a glimpse of what she (and sometimes I) are alluding to. So there’s a lengthy list of links below for you to dig into, in lieu of reading more babblings from your faithful host.
I will say this though: Seldom does it happen where I pester people over and over to be guests on this show. It’s not any sort of loss of interest, it’s more from a place of humility. So with today’s guest being someone I asked to be on the show a lot, the bar was set high for her eventual appearance.
I’m happy to report that she cleared that bar with ease, and provided one of the most insightful and pleasant podcasts I’ve recorded. Many thanks to her for gracing the show with such insight and warmth.

Now this sin’t exactly untrue – most of the films he’s dropped by to discuss have been disappointing, silly, underwhelming, or just straight-up bad. But it’s certainly not deliberate – no grand plot where I think “Robinson’s on-deck; what’s coming out that’s shitty?”. In-fact, what’s amusing to me is that despite usually sitting down to discuss a lacklustre film, this guest always brings the goods.
What’s more, he inspires me to bring the goods. Seven years later, and a whole new country he calls home – and he’s still inspiring fun episodes.
What I’m saying is, sometimes it’s great to sit down with people you barely know and wax about a truly great piece of filmmaking. Other times, it’s even better to sit down with a great friend and shoot the shit on a title that just didn’t work.

Matineecast 195 stands in stark contrast to what I have planned for Matineecast 196. The next episode is quite likely going to be recorded on-the-fly, with thoughts laid down mere moments after the film of choice ends. That’s not a common occurrence on this show, and near as I can remember it has been two whole years since The Matineecast last served as an impromptu post-mortem.
By contrast, Matineecast 196 had a few days come and go between watching and talking, which in the case of your humble narrator allowed time for some apprehensions to dispel, time for some curiosities to creep in, and time for appreciation to settle.
Basically, had this show followed the plan for the next show, my reaction would have been extremely different.
Regardless, I’m happy that my guest was free to join me at the last-minute, and that I stuck with a plan to discuss this film despite early inclinations to discuss something else. It made for a good time, and a good talk.

We’re back outside for the first time in six months or so. There were people around, there were distractions, there was traffic…and through it all, a nifty little show emerged! Maybe I should go Full-MaMo! and record these things outside more often.
Today’s guest was a great sport. First he came out and met the locals at pub night, listening to us argue like idiots and threaten to cut a bitch over the most inane questions (“BRITNEY!!! How the fuck can you even consider Christina as an answer??…”)…he then sat down for a coffee to talk about his budding film love on-mic. He sat in the hot seat and gave as good as he got.
Our selection today risks slipping off the radar in-between BLACK PANTHER and A WRINKLE IN TIME, but both my guest and I hope you fine folks get a chance to track it down since it’s the sort of cerebral sci-fi that doesn’t nearly get enough love at the box office nowadays.
Oh, and if you see my guest around, congratulate him on perhaps the very best unintentional bit of Other Side trolling in Matineecast history.

23:23 The New Slang: THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX

First things first – 2018 has brought about a few technical difficulties in capturing the show. Nothing yet has been unlistenable, but it also hasn’t really been up to the level I like. I’m on it folks – new tools are being procured for 194.
I never exactly took my guest today for a sci-fi nut, but this is the second sci-fi film in a row I’m discussing with him. It almost became the third, except back at TIFF a few years back instead of talking about the back half of the double feature we’d just watched (THE DOUBLE), I focused on the first (NIGHT MOVES)…and thus, a trend was broken.
Perhaps I should pre-emptively circle his guest spot for STAR WARS IX, the next STAR TREK, and the DAY AFTER TOMORROW sequel.
…or perhaps I should really mix things up, and get him for the next Richard Curtis Brit romance film…since word has it he’s a fan!
