Thoughts from your host…
As I was editing this episode on Sunday afternoon, I found myself momentarily distracted. See, I learned that a YouTube channel I love is officially calling it quits.
The channel is Every Frame a Painting, and in-truth, they haven’t posted any content in a year. This week though, they finally wrote a post discussing their feelings on turning out the lights and locking the door. Reading the post gave me bittersweet feelings, because so much of what Tony wrote aligns with my motives for keeping up this site and podcast…but still, what Tony wrote is in regards to why he can’t do it anymore.
I didn’t want to focus on “the end”, since I don’t yet feel like I’m at “the end”. Instead, I have been fixated on how he began. He describes his partner pushing him to do it in the first place as a response to being unhappy. Specifically, she said:
“... stop complaining about other people, and instead spend my energy on more productive things. Maybe I should make those videos I keep talking about, instead of bitching about work, or else I’d wake up in ten years and realize I’d gotten nowhere.”
It made me realize, I’ve been blessed with Taylors of my own. My wife, first and foremost (first, second, and third, really)…but so many more. Some I’ve met as a result of productive things, others that have reacted in-kind to the productive things.
I’m lucky to have them, lucky that they give me the drive to keep going, and lucky that I’m in the midst of getting many of them on the podcast as 2017 wraps up.
Though, they likely don’t know this show exists, I want to thank Tony and Taylor for inspiring me to keep up the cinematic discussion, and all of my own personal “Taylors” and “Tonys” for inspiring me to stay productive.
Cheers, folks.

Thoughts from your host…
Now and then, you start talking about a movie only to notice at a certain point you aren’t really talking about a movie anymore. This episode was one of those moments. The heart of the matter is a film about a band two podcasters both love…but the grander conversation is about community, mortality, and legacy.
In many ways, it’s the perfect episode to drop today.
The past twelve months haven’t been easy for me. There have been many days where I haven’t felt like myself, and many days when I’ve thought that nobody was listening. It’s not a feeling I’m used to…but one that I am working on understanding. Today’s guest and other people in my life like him have helped me get a grip. They give me that one thing that so many of us want – to feel like someone is listening. I’m deeply grateful, and truly want to thank them
To that end, I also want to thank you…for listening…for stopping by and making me feel like something I do matters. It’s not always easy to fold up these little paper boats and push them out on to the water. Lots of days you feel like they won’t find harbour.
Thank you…for letting me find harbour…and for listening, even for a minute.

4:40 Know Your Enemy: Jess Rogers from Reel Insight Podcast
20:46 The New Slang: THOR: RAGNAROK
55:31 The Other Side: Jess and Ryan talk further reading after the feature presentation
Thoughts from your host…
I’m never in much of a rush to discuss comic book films on the podcast, but when one of your best friends asks to come on to discuss Thor, how do you say “no”?
I’m actually quite grateful that today’s guest circled this movie as the one she wanted to talk about since the timing of it – and the enthusiasm surrounding it – serendipitously go a long way in helping me get this show back up to full-speed after the autumn hiatus. Part of me wonders if she planned it that way…
Well, intentional or not, I’m happy that Jess suggested we do this episode because the movie at the centre of it was such a fun time at the multiplex…and the ensuing conversation was a fun time on-mic.
Thanks Doc, I owe you one. Or twenty.

Thoughts from your host…
How’s it going, folks? Start to think that this podcast might never get back on the air? Sorry – I needed to get out of the house and get away from film for a few minutes. It did me good, I think – allowed me further perspective on the films I love.
It did me a lot of good, actually and I’m beginning to think that TIFF will start marking the end of my podcast season. I might begun to give the show a proper break for all of September…if not October as well.
Today, though we’re back up and running with a dear friend dropping by the show to bless its return.
Things got a little giggly as this episode went along, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. We’ve talked about several filthy films before on this show, but something about this film and this guest made me feel like being a bit less mature for once.
Y’all don’t mind, right? Right.
Thanks for tuning into episode one-hundred-eighty-five.

Time flies when you’re having fun! How else to explain how an entire week of the festival went past without turning on my mic and checking in with you fine folks. Sorry about that, dear listeners, but I hope I can make it worth the wait with a few postcards before the sun sets on the weekend to come
