Thoughts from your host…
The world gets back to normal tomorrow. Vacations end, school begins, focus increases on closing the books on 2017 after a few months of distraction. Before that though, I need to say one more thing about this past summer.
This summer – especially the summer on this podcast – has been a wonderful time to spend with my friends. Friends new and old, some I spoke with a lot, and some I hadn’t spoke to for quite some time. Week in and week out from June onward, my friends really came together to make this a great summer for the show.
If you look around, you might read that this was a lousy summer at the movies. I beg of you not to believe it. The franchises might not have been there for us, but there were meaty and mighty films at the arthouse that more than made up for it.
Case in point, the only trick to scheduling this show from July onward was juts that – the scheduling. We were never short on material…and thanks to my friends, I was also never short on guests.
Some went to see films that weren’t on their radar. Some rearranged their schedule to placate my podcasting desires. Then there were others who had never spoken a word on-mic, but brought the goods at my request.
The world gets back to normal tomorrow – and in many ways begins anew – but you’ll forgive me if I want to pour one out for the Summer of ’17 at The Cinema, and the joy it brought to this podcast.

There is much I can say about how much fun it is to have this episode’s guest on my show, or how great it felt to be podcasting out in the fresh morning air and making the most of my Sunday.
At the moment, though, I’m feeling like a man of few words.
So please, instead pour yourself a tall jar of moonshine and listen in as my good buddy and I shoot the shit on all things NASCAR, Soderbergh, Tom Cruise, and shooting horses.
Yes, really.

Now and then, I do ask myself why it is I choose to write and podcast about film. While the guests I gather will usually lead me in a different direction, how much more can I have to say about a film that I don’t cover in a written reaction.
Judging by this episode? The answer is “lots”.
A little more than a week ago, when I first tried to wrap my thoughts around A GHOST STORY, I locked myself into a dim room and spoke with my heart. Now, when opportunity came again to discuss David Lowery’s indie gem, I sat down in a bright cafe, invited a witty and enchanting friend along, and spoke with my heart.
That’s the benefit of considering a piece of art a few times, and taking others thoughts into consideration. It allows me to balance my head an my heart. I owe this week’s guest a special debt of thanks for that – and for nudging me towards the film in the first place.

There were cups of coffee, there were cherry confections. All I needed was a glass box and I could have been part of a David Lynch production!
Also, if I keep taking this show to diners and cafes, pretty soon I’m gonna be mistaken for MaMo. Still, it needed to be done.
This has been a week spent catching-up with old friends, and this podcast was a pretty big piece of that. It reminded me of some of the best workplace chatter I used to get on the regular, and now so dearly miss. So for what this episode lacks in polish, I do hope you get in camaraderie.

This is the sort of episode I love – one where a good friend comes by with a position vastly different to mine and we have at it. The jabs are landed with mutual respect, everyone’s game is elevated, and both sides know they will not make the other come to their way of seeing the topic at-hand…
…but it won’t stop either one of us from trying!
Whenever Ms. Fisher is kind enough to grace my meagre podcast with her presence, she makes me bring my A-game – as a critic, and as a podcast host. This is no exception.
