Thoughts from your host…
It’s strange to be publishing a podcast about an awards show while I watch another awards show. If I start name-checking Cardi B, please forgive me.
This year’s class of Oscar nominees comes with a lot of stories, and a lot of angles to consider. There are narratives that involve individual careers and an industry in-flux. There are small things to consider about big films, and big things to consider about small films. As usual, there’s not nearly enough time to get to it all…but in just under two hours, we sure do try!
Many of the categories we discuss are something of a fait accompli, which os why Marya and I are far more interested in who got named – and occasionally, who didn’t – than who wins.
Enjoy!

Welcome to 2018 – still no hoverboards.
My city was in a deep freeze this week, making it tough to brave the elements and get out of the house any more than necessary. Walking up the street to see a film took a few extra layers, and few extra doses of wherewithal…let alone driving across town to sit with friends and talk about the film.
With that in-mind, I am grateful for my guest this week. He made the trek downtown to rally-up twice in the cold (once to watch the film together, once more to record)…and both times it flew in the face of the desire to hibernate during this coldest, darkest time of year.
What’s more? Got a great film and a great episode out of it!
New questions for the guest await, as do comments about my wardrobe, and being skeptical over what we eat. Basically, as this podcast creeps towards 200, I find myself in good company…

Thoughts from your host…
There is a lot to say about the twelve months that have just gone by.
Perhaps it’s just me, but the last year seemed like it begged a long hard look in the mirror and true consideration of what it means to be part of this ever-changing world. Sometimes, that consideration comes best in a comfortable chair by ones self in a dim room. Other times, the answers come when you gather with people you care about and talk things out.
Today, I give you the latter.
My guests and I gathered to talk about the films that really affected us in the past twelve months, but in-truth, we gathered to talk about their affect. We broke bread, we poured the wine, we laughed, we confessed, and we faced the year gone by with graciousness and gratitude.
There were a lot of films left out of the conversation that handily could have factored into things, but as it was the show ran pretty long. What I’m saying is, 2017 was a great year for film that – despite all the hand-wringing about blockbuster entertainment – provided MUCH to talk about.
Let’s look back. Let’s look forward. Let’s look – always – inward.
As usual, if you’re curious about the songs used as bed music, the track list can be found above in the show notes.
As mentioned within the introduction, if you find the bed music distracting, a music-free version of this episode can be found here.

60:00 The Other Side: Nik and Ryan talk further reading after STAR WARS
If you know anything about this show, you know that we generally don’t discuss blockbusters all that often. There are several reasons, most of them not worth getting into here. However, when time comes to break bread with my international filmgoing friends, sometimes the blockbusters are a great help.
So it was this weekend, that thoughts of discussing an indie film about a teenage girl were scuttled…but in its place, conversation turned to a very big-budget movie about a whole other sort of special girl.
It be’s that way sometimes.
As if happens, my guest isn’t the biggest STAR WARS geek – but get her talking about HARRY POTTER, and look out! I love having film fans of all walks on this show, so if this Jedi discussion is informed by selections from The Restricted Section…then so be it.
