I am always gracious when a guest gives up their time to rap with me on-mic about films they see. Really, there are no favorites. However, some recordings are a bit more special to me than others mostly due to circumstances, and today is one of those instances. You see, if you’d told me a few years ago when I first started interacting online with Sam McCosh and Andy Buckle that one day I’d be able to break bread with them in my hometown, I’d have said to stop teasing me.
However, this morning, I did indeed share crepes and coffee with that sweet couple as we reflected on the week that was.
In particular, I was quite happy to talk with them about the idea of cost-versus-reward for undertaking a holiday like this. There has been a lot of chatter in the run-up to TIFF about the economics of it all with many locals grumbling feeling priced-out or ripped off. It’s interesting to hear Sam and Andy’s thoughts on what they got for (a big chunk of) their hard-earned.

With the gang from French Toast Sunday headed back to Baltimore, The Matineecast get back to its festival routine:
Raves. Rambles. Brinner.
This particular episode was one year in the making as my guest was supposed to drop by for TIFF 2013, but sadly fate intervened. That left me with even more anticipation for this festival, and likewise the chance to sit down face-to-face with a gent who has been a huge influence around these parts.
So without further ado take a seat in a surprisingly bustling late-night diner as we discuss some great action courtesy of Samuel L. Jackson and the team behind RARE EXPORTS.

This year we begin with something a little different.
If you’ve listened to any of these audio dispatches in the past, you know that we tend to talk about one movie for ten minutes, and then the festival experience on-the-whole for an additional ten. This time out though, I was graced with something of a surprise visit. So the film-reaction section is a bit more brief, and we find ourselves talking more about roadtripping in general and meeting people face-to-face for the first time.
A fun conversation, for sure!

Before I begin, I want to say a quick and humble thanks to everybody who gave me positive feedback on yesterday’s audio post. If you listen closely, can can sort of hear a touch of nerves to my voice…which is rare for me when I turn on my microphone. In short, I was worried about coming off badly and ending up looking foolish where I was only trying to help…and while that’s still always a possibility, hearing as many positive responses as I did really hit me square in the chest.
If you haven’t listened yet, please do.
As for today’s order of business, it brings me a great deal of joy to be closing out the summer season of podcasts with the film Jessica and I chose to discuss today. You see, while it took a while to get going, I’m of the firm belief that there were so many great indies at the theatre this summer…and that they tend to leave us with so much to discuss. Don’t get me wrong, I had a ball discussing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON…but I feel like there were so many more things to hash into this summer from the films of Jaramusch, Linklater, Woody Allen, and the like.
And indeed, there is a lot to get into with this one last gasp of summer, and I got to get into it with a mysterious Swede who has always felt like my blogosphere big sister. She is wise where I am not, and leaves me directions to the great things that I’ll find cool when I’m old enough to appreciate them. She’s awesome that way.

As I’ve mentioned a few times already, last week had me on a short excursion to the state of Missouri to catch some Royals and Cardinals baseball. When it came time to travel from Kansas City to Missouri (a trip of almost 250 miles), I opted to go by train. After a few hours of napping, reading, eavesdropping, and watching the Show Me State go by, I realized that I was wasting some valuable editing hours and decided to crack open my laptop to work on this episode.
All the more enticing was the fact that this is the show I drop every summer that comes with the least amount of edits…so just some embedded images, some music cues, and voila!
I say as much in the episode, but it’s worth mentioning again – my deep thanks this week goes out to my guest for this show who took the ball on very short notice (complete with almost all of the homework done). The trickiest part of my format is how much it relies on the time and energy of my friends, so I sometimes when a plane doesn’t come together, a back-up plan needs to hastily be executed. This was one of those times, and for that I am greatly thankful to this week’s guest.

This episode, for instance, was recorded a few days before I sat down to write my final review. I’d had a chance to sit with the film for a little while, but hadn’t fully hashed-out where it was sitting with me. Like many of the films that have stuck with me the most over the last several years, BOYHOOD required thought and consideration. Not as to whether-or-not I liked it (that much was clear), but how much I liked it and what ways it had affected me.
So within the span of this episode, you’ll hear a mild amount of uncertainty between really-goodness or greatness. While that uncertainty would dissipate in the days that follow, and disappear completely by the time I published my review, it is recorded here for posterity to remind me that love and appreciation for art can grow…in days as easily as it can in years.
So while an article or essay can be revised, re-edited, re-considered, and re-published…what one says on-air is caught and released out into the world.
It almost makes me wish I had more episodes on films like FARGO, THE THIN RED LINE, or 2001; A SPACE ODYSSEY that I initially disliked.
