All sad signs that summer is almost over folks.

However, before we pull our fall coats out of the closet, and start pouring pumpkin spice lattes down our throats, I wanted to get one last gasp of summer. One last evening of fresh air spent discussing film as the sun set on my city. So I called on a good friend, found a patio, and rolled tape.

What you hear is completely raw without the usual spit-and-polish that I put into the show. If you’re a longtime listener, you’ll recall that I do one of these every summer, just to change things up and get a bit of oxygen into the show.

So you know that road trip I’ve been mentioning around these parts? Well you didn’t really think that two podcasters were going to get together for a weekend and not roll tape, did you?

In honour of my first ever time in the Land of 1000 Lakes, I thought we’d record something special to discuss two of the greatest cinematic minds the state ever produced. It was either that, or review PURPLE RAIN, and I think we made the right choice.

It’s rare that I record two podcasts in one day. It’s rarer still that I record two episodes of my own show in one day. Just make matters stranger, it’s the second of the two that is posting first. So if you find yourself asking “where’s episode ninety?”…it’s coming up next week.

After watching a blu-ray last night, Lindsay looked at me and said “I couldn’t wait for that to be over!” To say I was caught unawares would be putting it mildly. If you’ve followed this show for a while, you might know that sometimes when we disagree on a film, the disagreement is recorded for posteriety.

Last Sunday, I got up pretty damned early and turned on my podcasting mic. Despite a thirteen hour time difference, and a slight weariness on my side, a wonderful piece of film discussion was captured for posterity as Matineecast 90.

Some five hours later, a breakfast table discussion prompted me to take a seat on the balcony, and turn my mic on again. Thus, yet another film discussion was captured for posterity as Matineecast 91.

But what of episode 90?

Well, for a litany of reasons, I decided to hold on to episode 90 until this week, despite all evidence pointing towards me not being able to count. If you listen closely to the end of episode 90, it still seems like I’m unable to count. But it should all get back to normal by episode 92.

Back to the matter at hand, I’m very happy to finally be able to sit down with this guest, and if there was ever a person worth getting up at 7:30 on a Sunday, she’s it.

When I was mapping out this summer’s worth of podcasts, I thought for certain that this would be a week where everybody went to see the same movie and all of the podcasts would be talking about the same title. Who knew the film would end up underperforming and that it wouldn’t be the subject of every other show out there?

It be’s that way sometimes.

For a second or two, I wasn’t sure that today’s guest was going to turn on his mic at the designated time and place. Summer right? Scheduling is a bitch. For what it’s worth, I’m glad he did as he truly brought the goods to the entire show…leaving me to wonder why he doesn’t do more podcasting himself.

Oh, and there’s somewhat of a format change to this episode that made its production different that the previous 88 episodes. I’m curious if it comes through in the final cut.

Sometimes a podcast is about more than the subject at hand. Sometimes, what is being discussed with unforeseen honesty and candour isn’t actually one’s take on a movie, but one’s take on life in general. I don’t know why certain guests are sparked by a feeling of honesty, but when they are, I can’t help but get a little more honest myself.

To put a point on it, what Andrew is right about is that sometimes a podcast isn’t about a movie, it’s about the people watching the movie. This is one of those times.

I mention this within the recording itself, but it bears repeating – I need to give a high degree of thanks to John LaRue. John – the brains behind The Droid You’re Looking For – is pretty badass when it comes to graphics. So when I decided that the time had finally come to retire The Matineecast’s microphone icon and bring in something new, John was only too happy to employ his mad skills.

So thanks again John; your handiwork sure does look sweet in the sidebar of this lowly blog.

Listening back to this episode, I really feel a bit dumb. As I mention within the span of the show, it took me far too long to get this gentleman back on to a full episode of my show…and once I got him back, he brought the goods.
