It’s rare that I record two podcasts in one day. It’s rarer still that I record two episodes of my own show in one day. Just make matters stranger, it’s the second of the two that is posting first. So if you find yourself asking “where’s episode ninety?”…it’s coming up next week.
Just go with it.
After watching a blu-ray last night, Lindsay looked at me and said “I couldn’t wait for that to be over!” To say I was caught unawares would be putting it mildly. If you’ve followed this show for a while, you might know that sometimes when we disagree on a film, the disagreement is recorded for posteriety.
This time around, we argue over one of this year’s most acclaimed films…

Last Sunday, I got up pretty damned early and turned on my podcasting mic. Despite a thirteen hour time difference, and a slight weariness on my side, a wonderful piece of film discussion was captured for posterity as Matineecast 90.
Some five hours later, a breakfast table discussion prompted me to take a seat on the balcony, and turn my mic on again. Thus, yet another film discussion was captured for posterity as Matineecast 91.
But what of episode 90?
Well, for a litany of reasons, I decided to hold on to episode 90 until this week, despite all evidence pointing towards me not being able to count. If you listen closely to the end of episode 90, it still seems like I’m unable to count. But it should all get back to normal by episode 92.
Back to the matter at hand, I’m very happy to finally be able to sit down with this guest, and if there was ever a person worth getting up at 7:30 on a Sunday, she’s it.

When I was mapping out this summer’s worth of podcasts, I thought for certain that this would be a week where everybody went to see the same movie and all of the podcasts would be talking about the same title. Who knew the film would end up underperforming and that it wouldn’t be the subject of every other show out there?
It be’s that way sometimes.
For a second or two, I wasn’t sure that today’s guest was going to turn on his mic at the designated time and place. Summer right? Scheduling is a bitch. For what it’s worth, I’m glad he did as he truly brought the goods to the entire show…leaving me to wonder why he doesn’t do more podcasting himself.
Oh, and there’s somewhat of a format change to this episode that made its production different that the previous 88 episodes. I’m curious if it comes through in the final cut.

Sometimes a podcast is about more than the subject at hand. Sometimes, what is being discussed with unforeseen honesty and candour isn’t actually one’s take on a movie, but one’s take on life in general. I don’t know why certain guests are sparked by a feeling of honesty, but when they are, I can’t help but get a little more honest myself.
To put a point on it, what Andrew is right about is that sometimes a podcast isn’t about a movie, it’s about the people watching the movie. This is one of those times.
I mention this within the recording itself, but it bears repeating – I need to give a high degree of thanks to John LaRue. John – the brains behind The Droid You’re Looking For – is pretty badass when it comes to graphics. So when I decided that the time had finally come to retire The Matineecast’s microphone icon and bring in something new, John was only too happy to employ his mad skills.
So thanks again John; your handiwork sure does look sweet in the sidebar of this lowly blog.
Two other programming notes: This episode’s discussion of BEFORE MIDNIGHT doesn’t begin until its final act, so if you’ve only seen Linklater’s previous two films, please do tune in for those chapters. Further to that point, the discussion never skips ahead. So if you’re interested in listening, but don’t want to be spoiled with what’s to come, we’ve got you covered.

Listening back to this episode, I really feel a bit dumb. As I mention within the span of the show, it took me far too long to get this gentleman back on to a full episode of my show…and once I got him back, he brought the goods. It’s not just today’s guest, there are nine or ten people I can think of that give good audio. Makes me think I should tear up my rulebook and just start dipping into the same talent pool repeatedly.
Perhaps…
Back to today’s action, suffice it to say you’re in for good times.

This year I kept things much lower-key than I have in the past, and perhaps in a sign of my old age, I found it very much to my liking. As I moved to and for through my wonderfully low-key birthday weekend, I was kept in a constant state of joy thanks to the many well-wishes that were getting sent to me by my fellow bloggers and podcasters. So while I’ve said it a few times already, let me say it once more: I’m a lucky man to have the sort of readers, listeners, friends, and family that I do.
As for the podcast, it gets in on the birthday celebration by continuing the newfound tradition of discussing an old favorite. Considering how much I’ve latched on to Billy Wilder over the last twelve months, the choice of film was a no-brainer. As for my guest, I reached out to someone who has become as good of a friend as one could want for, and has done it with a great deal of generosity and grace.
Finally, I made one more change to the show. I know last week I said that going forward I would be using My Morning Jacket as the official theme song of The Matineecast, but in listening back, I didn’t feel like it struck quite the note I wanted. So this week, I’ve gone with a different choice – one that I’m more apt to stick with going forward.
The Birthday party os just about over, but there’s still tea and cake. So help yourself and listen in as I start my 35th spin around the sun.

I might well use a special tune in honour of the film being discussed (as was the case with the SKYFALL episode), but going forward look for this track by My Morning Jacket to kick things off.
Speaking of changes – I’m also looking to replace the “Welcome to Wherever You Are” graphic if anyone wants to hook me up with a graphic designer.
As for the activities at hand, I hope you get good and comfy for this episode because it’s a long one. If I wanted to be ruthless, I could have cut it down to size, but the truth is I found the discussion just way too much fun. Therefore, I present to you the longest single-guest episode I’ve ever posted, and the third longest episode overall.

I do hope y’all enjoyed the audio component of my 2013 Hot Docs coverage, but now three weeks and three director interviews later, The Matineecast Classic has returned.
Ordinarily, the show seems to come out of the festival and launch into discussion of a Marvel movie. This year though, our attention is turned towards Baz Luhrmann. As much as I’ve enjoyed covering Marvel movies every May, I gotta say this is a welcome switch.
As for my guest, I’m pretty excited to be welcoming her to the show. I’ve been going back and forth with her for months on episodes she might be interested in, and her enthusiasm for dropping by was really encouraging. Hopefully she likes the result, and hopefully I don’t drown her out with TOO much talking.

I had just started getting used to the short dispatches these Hot Docs episodes were becoming, when along came a great discussion that turned out to run the length of a normal Matineecast episode! Who knew there would be so much to say about Republicans in Iowa?
The great thing about this discussion is that beyond the film up for discussion itself, I’m able to get my guest to share a few insightful thoughts on nonfiction film in general.

Sometimes you find a film, sometimes a film finds you. In the run-up to Hot Docs I was given a whole mittful of titles to go through, and right around the time I thought I’d watched as much as I could in advance, I found myself saying “just one more.
The Matineecast stays nonfiction as I sit down with a the director of this beautiful film at the 20th annual Hot Docs Film Festival.
The moment this film was done, I immediately reached out to the filmmaker in the hopes we could discuss his work. Luckily for me, he agreed.
