SURGERY WAIT TIMES INCREASE AS CANADA TRIES TO REDUCE SURGERY BACKLOG

Libby Znaimer is now joined by Tracy Johnson, Director of  Health System Analytics at CIHI (Canadian Institute for Health Information).

The surgery backlog is concerning, and the data put out by CIHI justifies that concern. According to their report, there were  937,000 less surgeries performed in Canada since March 2020. Cataract surgeries and joint replacements made up 24 per cent of that reduction. Only about 50 per cent of patients needing a knee replacement had their surgeries within 6 months versus 70 per cent before the pandemic. So, why do wait times persist and even get worse as our healthcare system works to tackle the backlog?
