  • TMP-Ep 116 - To Be Worthy of Our Suffering
What does it mean "to be worthy of our suffering"?

Dr. Viktor Frankl writes in 'Man's Search for Meaning':

“Dostoevski said once, "There is only one thing I dread: not to be worthy of my sufferings." These words frequently came to my mind after I became acquainted with those martyrs whose behavior in camp, whose suffering and death, bore witness to the fact that the last inner freedom cannot be lost. It can be said that they were worthy of the their sufferings; the way they bore their suffering was a genuine inner achievement. It is this spiritual freedom—which cannot be taken away—that makes life meaningful and purposeful.”

We discuss this idea, and more, in this week's episode.

  • TMP-Ep115 - What is a "Meaning Mastermind"?
You may have heard or read about the latest project I've been working on - The Meaning Academy. Our goal is to continue to share the ideas and applications of Dr. Frankl, logotherapy, and all the work that has gone into this field in the past 50+ years. So we have banded together as logotherapists and fans of Frankl to grow a tribe of "Meaning Seekers".

One of the ways we have been doing this for the past few months is in hosting Meaning Masterminds every Thursday afternoon at 3pm EST. This is an opportunity for people to gather virtually and have our team of experts work through issues and problems using principles of logotherapy.

Recently, I hosted a Meaning Mastermind on the topic of Tragic Optimism - I thought it would a good use of this podcast episode to share that mastermind session with you. Enjoy!

  • TMP-Ep114 - Finding Mental Health & Meaning in Vacation
What is meaningful about taking a vacation? Why is it important that we "vacate" our day-to-day lives on occasion to experience new things? How can we take what we learn on vacation, and incorporate it into everyday life? In this episode, B. and I discuss these ideas from a logotherapeutic and psychological perspective.

  • TMP-Ep111 - Billionaires, Submarines, & Human Reductionism
I've always had a reaction to the word "reductionism" since I first read it during my early studies of Dr. Frankl's work. The idea that we reduce each other to a single word, or thought, or label - it still makes me cringe. I am reminded of how each prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps was stripped of their humanity and reduced to a number - Dr. Viktor Frankl, neurologist, psychologist, husband, and expecting father was reduced to prisoner #119104.

You would think we learned something from that. But from what I saw of the internet last week, reacting to the tragedy of a missing mini-submarine in some of the most visceral ways imaginable, it seems maybe we haven't. Although, I am hopeful I was witness to the worst of the reactions, as "The Algorithm" often does. I hope we have more humanity for each other, and less reductionism.

So that is the nature of my chat with Rabbi B. in this week's episode of The Meaning Project Podcast w/ The Meaning Academy. I hope you enjoy and find it meaningful.

  • TMP-Ep110 - Radical Honesty or Radical Responsibility w/ The Meaning Academy
There is an idea in psychology that "Radical Honesty" with one's self and those around you is an important key to health and happiness. Not just an idea, but a book and series of workshops on the idea, if you are interested. Serendipitously, Rabbi B. found this idea during a week where several of the clients I work with struggled with "honesty" in critical ways - and not just "lying", the lack of honesty, but in some ways, TOO MUCH honesty. So, B. and I decided to pepper this idea around and compare it to logotherapy's concept of "Response-ability", or, what we called, for today, "Radical Responsibility". Enjoy!

And, if you want to read a little more in-depth about the cases I've referenced at above, I'll write a little more about them over at on my website, www.DanielAFranz.com

  • TMP-Ep109 - Prospect Theory w/ Dr. Dennis Tansley
Dr. Dennis Tansley is an amazing chat. He has spent most of his life serving, in some capacity, in the United States Air Force. Today he serves as a Psychologist at the VA. His story from being "a hippie in a van" to Officer Training School (OTS) to now a Counseling Psychologists helping Veterans is fun and moving.

I was introduced to Dr. Tansely by Terry Fossum, author of The Oxcart Technique. Dennis wrote the foreward for Terry's book, as he has considerable knowledge of "Prospect Theory", which relates to The Oxcast Technique, as well as quite a few other more esoteric theories of counseling psychology. Our talk meanders through those theories, Dennis's history of service, and the lengths he went to in order to get into OTS. Enjoy.

  • TMP-Ep108 - Self-Awareness and Resiliency w/ Michael Laidler
Michael Laidler was born and raised in Miami, Florida, by a single mother and his grandmother. With no father around, he had to learn how to lead himself before he learned how to lead others. He had to learn how to survive his surroundings, moving every year just to stay above water.

At the age of 19 years old, he entered the law enforcement industry as a police officer in Tallahassee, Florida. During his time, he became a Field Training Officer (FTO) and earned the Life Savings Award. At 23 years old, he shifted law enforcement agencies and became a Border Patrol Agent in Laredo, Texas. He was a member of specialized field units as well as a K-9 Handler. As he sought more challenging roles, he joined the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He held positions of increasingly greater responsibility to include Correctional Officer, Special Investigative Services Technician, Lieutenant, Special Investigative Agent and Employee Development Manager. Each of these roles developed he expertise as a law enforcement officer.

Today, he takes that experience and speaks on topics related to, Greatness Beyond the Badge: The Three Keys for Self-Awareness and Leading In the Trenches: The Battle To Retain Your People.
