Lucy Schonegevel is Associate Director for Policy and Practice at Rethink Mental Illness – the national charity that improves the lives of people severely affected by mental illness through local groups and services, expert information and training and successful campaigning. Lucy oversees the team responsible for understanding the current issues people living with severe mental illness are facing and lobbying decision makers to bring about change, as well as overseeing projects to test out news ways of supporting people. The priority at the moment is to ensure people receive the clinical, practical and social support they need in the community – particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-production with people with lived experience is at the hear of everything we do, as well as working closely with clinicians through our Clinical Advisory Group.

Presenters Nicky Lambert and Vanessa Garrity were joined by guests Dr Jill Anderson, Dr Helen Spandler and Tamsin Walker to discuss Radical Mental Health Zines: From 35 years of Asylum Magazine to the Madzines project.

Dr. Jill Anderson is Senior Research Fellow on the MadZines project. She is also on the editorial board of Asylum magazine; she co-facilitates CCRaMHP (Critical & Creative approaches to Mental Health Practice in Lancaster); and set up the interdisciplinary Mental Health in Higher Education Project (MHHE).

Dr. Helen Spandler is Professor of Mental Health Studies at the University of Central Lancashire and Principal Investigator of the MadZines Research project (funded by the Wellcome Trust). Helen is also the Managing Editor of Asylum: the radical mental health magazine.

Tamsin Walker is doing a PhD as part of the MadZines project. She has worked in various voluntary sector mental health roles over the last twenty years, setting up and developing award winning survivor led projects in schools and community settings whilst also doing freelance illustration. Her cartoons have often featured in Asylum magazine.

Welcome to episode 38 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 24 February 2021] of #mhTV​​​. Presenters Nicky Lambert and Vanessa Garrity were joined by guests Grant King & Dr Mike Ramsay to discuss “Empathy is an intervention” - key values & qualities in mental health nursing.

Grant King is an award winning lecturer in mental health nursing and the academic lead for learning disability at the University of Dundee. His clinical career focused on child development and the mental health of children, young people and their families. Grant’s career took him from NHS Lothian, to NHS Fife and finally to NHS Tayside. He has also worked for the Scottish Government developing maternal and child health policy as well as working in the third sector for Action for Children. Grant also has a particular clinical and academic interest in spiritual care delivery and was the lead for spiritual care in the mental health services in NHS Tayside. He also works with university colleagues in arts and humanities in the exploration of the intersection between these disciplines and nursing/healthcare; specifically though the medium of comics.

Dr Mike Ramsay is a mental health nursing lecturer, part-time practitioner, researcher and writer. He has led post-qualifying BSc programme at the School of Health Sciences, University of Dundee, since September having been professional lead for mental health for the 6 years. Mike's NHS career spanned 20 years prior to academic life as an RGN then RMN working in forensic, acute, rehabilitation and older people's in-patient care before 8 years as senior nurse in hospital and community settings. He is an active member of MHNA and has served on the editorial board of Mental Health Nursing since 2006, including 6.5years as Chair. Mike's academic interests centre upon therapeutic communication, sociology of mental health and research interests include carers for those with dementia and nursing education. His doctoral thesis explored graduateness in nursing and educational influences in compassion in nursing and social work. The latter extends from interest in the nature of empathy and compassion in the therapeutic relationships nurses craft.

On the episode we talked about the role of the approved mental health professional. Also, with the recent publication of the government's response to the Review of the Mental Health Act we talked about the current Act in England and how future changes proposed might impact on people using mental health services and the staff involved.

Tony is a qualified & registered Social Work England Social Worker, a #GrumpyAMHP and an ex-Best Interest Assessor. He likes history and has a nerdy AMHP interest in legal literacy, when it comes to the interface between the Mental Health Act (MHA) and the Mental Capacity Act (MCA). Tony has a favourite section of the MHA (S.149) and is a big fan of S.140 (he is a self-professed nerd). He is, by default, a very well qualified & experienced social worker & AMHP. He holds the Post Qualifying Award in Social Work award, and is a Higher Specialist MH Social Worker & Practice Educator.

Natasha is a writer, activist and LBC (radio) presenter. She tours schools, colleges, universities and events throughout the world, delivering talks as well as conducting research on mental health, body image, gender and social equality. She campaigns both on and offline to make the world a fairer place. Her current projects include the Mental Health Media Charter.

Robin co-founded We Can Talk (@WeCanTalkCYPMH) in 2017 while working as a senior nurse in children and young peoples mental health services. He has worked with children, young people and their parents / carers in a variety of community and acute hospital settings alongside national roles at NHS England and Health Education England. Robin is the founding director of Healthy Teen Minds, an organisation empowering young people to create change through coproduction and lead We Can Talk partner. Robin served as National Director from 2017-2020 and continues to provide strategic support, guidance and oversight to the We Can Talk project.

Chris is the National Director of We Can Talk (@WeCanTalkCYPMH) and a dual trained registered nurse (adult and child) with more than 30 years experience and specialist qualifications in emergency care, paediatric intensive care, autonomous practice and practice education. Chris was part of the original We Can Talk pilot project and has continued to work with us alongside senior roles at Health Education England and various NHS trusts. Chris oversees the delivery of the We Can Talk project providing expert advice, leadership and training alongside her operational roles.

Fiona is a nurse and lecturer in adult nursing at Edinburgh Napier University. Before embarking on her nursing career, Fiona studied for an arts degree in Drama, and she draws on these skills in her educational role. She is committed to influencing nursing education in order to engage students in high quality teaching and assessment strategies within the contemporary education and the clinical practice environment. Drawing on her range of clinical and educational experience she has developed effective partnerships to deliver innovative evidence-based education that supports students to meet the challenges of current nursing practice. In her most recent project, Fiona has enjoyed collaborating with students, community actors and her academic colleagues in bringing service user experiences to life through the medium of drama and film. This co-productive work brings together her passions for nursing care, authentic learning in education, and performance.

Dr Alex Mermikides is a theatre researcher investigating the intersections between contemporary performance, healthcare and medicine. Her books include Performance and the Medical Body (2016) and Performance, Medicine and the Human (2020), both published by Bloomsbury). She runs Chimera, an arts/research network founded with an award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Through this network, she creates performances on medical themes, often working in collaboration with healthcare specialists and patients. Her work has been featured in The Guardian, The Times Higher Educational Supplement and on This Week (BBC Radio 4).
