  • Role Model: Mulan Part 1

This episode marks the first episode in the role model series. In these episodes, we will break down a character and world that they live in to learn more about ourselves. Part 1 of 1998's Mulan covers from the beginning of the movie up until the song, "I'll make a man out of you." Throughout the intro we see that the culture is patriarchal, and the people have internalized the view that men are superior to women. Unwavered by what society expects of her, Mulan will forge her own path and will be forced to fit in as a man. Because Mulan is put in this extreme position, the audience is able to learn from how she chooses to either give in or double down on what makes her different.

I discussed how to stay inspired and gave some examples of systems that allow me to follow my passions easier. I discussed having role models to look up to and use their strengths as our own. I also discussed how we need to value the lives of the people we talk to in order to learn and grow from them. Finally, I discussed bettering our life by changing the world around us one small step at a time.
