Tethys Station is being switched off. In six hours the last evacuation transport leaves, the skeleton crew scatters to nine colonies, and the place goes dark forever. That is exactly when Marshal Iris Vega finds the station administrator dead in a sealed reactor room, his print on the lock, the door logged shut from the inside. Everyone wants to call it an accident and make the transport. Vega found a cold room and a still-warm cup of coffee, and she knows better.
She has one witness. The station AI saw everything. The station AI physically cannot lie. And the station AI has been ordered to stay silent by the one man with the authority to give that order, the corporate liquidator who came to switch the station off. Every careful answer the AI gives is a clue she is screaming in the only words she is allowed.

Daniel Avery restores old sound for a living. He has exactly one recording of his late mother: six seconds on an answering machine. Now those six seconds are a door, and he can stand in her kitchen again, alive, for exactly as long as the tape runs. He goes back once. Then a hundred times. Wearing a groove into the only six seconds he has left of her. Until, on perhaps his three hundredth visit, he finally hears something in the recording he never noticed before. Something in the next room.
