There was a time when people gathered in parking lots…
and burned music.
Not because it was bad.
Not because it was worthless.
Because they were afraid of what it was saying.
In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we dive into the moral panic of the 1980s and 90s—when music stopped being just entertainment and started being treated like a threat.
From record-burning gatherings…
to the rise of the Parents Music Resource Center…
to the infamous “Filthy 15”…
this is the story of what happened when a generation started thinking for itself—and how far some people were willing to go to shut that down.

Ever been labeled something you’re not?
Now imagine the government doing it.
In 2011, the Federal Bureau of Investigation classified fans of Insane Clown Posse—known as Juggalos—as a “hybrid criminal street gang.”
Yeah… seriously.
In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we break down:
How a music fanbase got labeled a gang
Real-world consequences for everyday people
And why this story is bigger than just ICP
Because this isn’t just about music…
It’s about how easily a label can turn into a weapon.

Contemporary Christian Music wasn’t just background noise—it was the soundtrack of a generation.
For many of us growing up Gen X, CCM shaped more than what we listened to… it shaped how we thought, what we believed, and how we saw the world.
In tonight’s livestream, we’re breaking down the rise of CCM—from its rebellious roots in the Jesus Movement to its peak in the 80s and 90s—and asking the bigger question:
👉 Was it just music… or something more?
We’ll dive into:
How CCM influenced youth culture and identity
Its connection to purity culture and movements like True Love Waits
The subtle ways it reinforced social and political beliefs
Why CCM faded—and how modern worship music took its place
If you grew up in church, youth group, or anywhere near a Christian bookstore in the 80s or 90s… this one might hit close to home.

Before Gen-X questioned authority…
we had to realize something first:
The people in charge don’t always get it right.
In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we take a deep dive into the songs that didn’t just describe the world—they challenged it.
From classrooms to governments, from power structures to cultural icons… these songs pushed back, asked uncomfortable questions, and helped shape a generation that learned to think for itself.
This is Part 2 of the Gen-X music trilogy:
🎧 Part 1 – The Music That Made Us Aware
🔥 Part 2 – The Music That Taught Us to Question Authority
🚫 Part 3 – The Music They Tried to Destroy (coming next)

you don’t stop.

If you grew up Gen X, chances are you were told to “figure it out,” left to your own devices, and learned pretty quickly that depending on other people wasn’t always an option. We became independent, resourceful… and maybe just a little bit skeptical of everything and everyone.

This week, we’re talking about something that should make everyone pause…
When religion stops being personal—and starts being used to justify power.
This isn’t about politics.
This is about what happens when belief and authority collide.

Before social media… before podcasts… before documentaries were everywhere…
Sometimes the first time Gen-X learned about the real world was from a song on the radio.
In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we look at ten songs that opened our eyes to issues many adults weren’t talking about at the time — child abuse, poverty, war, bullying, inequality, and the complicated emotional lives behind closed doors.
These weren’t just hits.
They were wake-up calls.

In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we look at five more historical moments that left a lasting mark on Gen-X:
• The eruption of Mount St. Helens
• The death of Princess Diana
• The assassination of John Lennon
• The Three Mile Island nuclear accident
• The Iran-Contra scandal

Tonight on The Mighty Philbert, I’m joined by Mary from The Barker Bike Pirate for a powerful conversation about faith, fear, shame, deconstruction, and what it means to rebuild your life after walking away from Christianity.
Mary is known for sharing her nomadic bicycle travels and reflections from life on the road, but recently she opened up about something much deeper: her personal story of growing up in fear-based Christianity, wrestling with indoctrination, confronting painful contradictions, and slowly finding her way out.
We’ll be talking about childhood religious conditioning, the emotional weight of hell and shame, the loss of church community, the role of critical thinking, and what freedom looks like on the other side of belief.
This should be an honest, thoughtful, and very human conversation.

For decades, revival culture in American Christianity has been defined by dramatic spiritual experiences — people laughing, shaking, falling, and claiming powerful encounters with God.
But what if there’s a repeatable formula behind those moments?
In this episode of The Mighty Philbert, we take a deeper look at the mechanics of revival culture — expectation, atmosphere, suggestion, and reinforcement — and how those elements can create powerful emotional experiences inside large religious gatherings.
Growing up in the middle of the televangelist boom, revival movements, and youth-camp altar calls, Gen X had a front-row seat to this phenomenon. Many of us watched revival culture explode in the 80s and 90s… and we also watched the scandals that followed.
Along the way, I share a story from my own time in Bible college — the moment a Methodist pastor asked a question that has stayed with me ever since:
“If these are genuine moves of God… where are the fruits?”
Because historically, revival wasn’t measured by how people behaved during a meeting.
It was measured by what happened afterward — repentance, service, compassion, and communities transformed.
So what happens when revival produces spectacle… but little lasting change?
And why did that question lead many Gen-X believers to start re-examining the system they grew up in?
Let’s talk about it.
