A prominent Auckland school is being celebrated for its decision to build gender-neutral bathrooms.

Auckland Grammar is putting one of these bathrooms in its new block to accommodate for transgender students.

They don't currently have any trans students but the principal Tim O'Connor wants the school to be ready.

PPTA rainbow taskforce member Shawn Cooper says he applauds the school headmaster's foresight.

"This is a fantastic move by Grammar to prepare for what the future challenges may be for them."

Donald Trump says he's open to gun control but that doesn't mean it's going to happen.

The US president says he isn't opposed to more comprehensive background checks and a minimum age for buying some weapons.

He's also open to banning controversial "bump stocks", which can turn a semi-automatic into an automatic weapon.

But US correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking ordinary Republicans won't be willing to support those measures.

"The gun lobby instantly has opposed this. [It's] not clear how many of these ideas can be carried out without legislative support and there's little sign of that."

Equal pay champion Kristine Bartlett has been named the Kiwibank 2018 New Zealander of the Year.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern presented the award to the rest home carer who campaigned for pay equity on behalf of 55,000 low-paid, mainly female care and support workers.

Her hard work saw her pay, which was just over the minimum wage, $15.75, jump to $23.50, with further pay rises over five years to $27 an hour.

The settlement equated to $2b over five years.

The award was given at a cermony on Thursday night at the The Cordis Auckland hotel.

Britain is already looking at a trade deal with New Zealand, post-Brexit.

Lord Mayor of London Charles Bowman is here talking to government officials and business leaders.

There is concern the Government's fees free policy will encourage students to enrol in courses they have little hope of passing.

Universities New Zealand has written to Education Minister, Chris Hipkins saying students who enrol in foundation courses, which prepare them for university, will have to pay $700 per year.

In contrast, those who enter directly into degree programmes will study for free.

Universities New Zealand executive director, Chris Whelan told Mike Hosking foundation courses are usually 120 credits, which is well outside the 60 credits exemption allowed under the fees free policy.

"So these kids have to pay, basically for their first-year fees free, even though they're the students, in theory, the government's been most aiming this policy at."
