A simple solution for the increasingly common problem of "double chins".

MedSafe has approved an injectable acid, which can remove the pad of fat that builds up under the chin.

About half of adults report some kind of "double chin".

The Skin Institute's Dr Sarah Hart told Mike Hosking the injection process only takes about 10 minutes.

"It's not a walk in, walk out treatment. Often you would not want to go back to work immediately afterwards but the good news is that it doesn't require any surgery."

The process costs upwards from $3000.

Author and inspirational speaker, Sir Ken Robinson says education systems need to recognise people have different interests, talents and abilities.

He told Mike Hosking we can customise our cars, and furnish our homes, buy our clothes and order our food according to our interests.

"There is absolutely no reason why we can't move beyond these mass systems of standardised education, to something much more nuisance, customised and personalised for people going through the system."

He says the more technology and business needs change, the more we'll recognise this makes good economic sense.

Despite warnings to stay away, about 100 tourists are trapped in South Westland.

Civil Defence is asking people to say off the roads, as ex-cyclone Gita blasts through.

Chelsea Daniels told Mike Hosking a number of tourists were forced to sleep in buses.

"42 Chinese tourists have spent the night sleeping in two buses about two hours south of Greymouth. 25 are in refuge Whataroa Community Hall and in Haast around 30 tourists there. Westland Civil Defence says plenty of people were out driving despite the warning."

Meanwhile, in Taranaki strong winds have brought down power lines but reporter Abe Leach says things aren't as bad as they could have been.

"No significant road damage to report, no major road closures in place at the moment, there are however 10,000 properties around the region still without power." 

However, in Nelson residents feared for their lives last night as a number of properties flooded.

Several major roads have been damaged, properties are without power, and around 150 people were evacuated.

Reporter Frances Cook says the region faces a massive clean up.

"I talked to one man and the water had started rising through the floorboards and he has an 11-month-old son and got such a fright as he and his wife were fleeing, he just burst into tears."

Government agencies are gearing up to help local bodies deal with the aftermath of ex-Cyclone Gita.

The storm has flooded houses and roads, caused slips and damaged roads, especially in Taranaki and Tasman.

Civil Defence director Sarah Stuart-Black told Mike Hosking the National Crisis Management Centre has been activated.

She says that's to provide support to all the affected local authorities and coordinate Government assistance.

Stuart-Black say Fire, Police, the Defence Force, the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment and the Ministry of Health are all there.

She says they're ready to respond to any requests on the ground

Cyclone Gita has barrelled into New Zealand.

Christchurch along with six other provinces are in a state of emergency.

Christchurch mayor, Lianne Dalziel told Mike Hosking a number of roads are closed but says Christchurch has largely 'dodged the bullet'.

"We've coped quite well actually, I think we escaped the worst of it [...] It seems the cyclone spoilt and tracked further south than expected."

International Business Forum executive director Stephen Jacobi told Mike Hosking the Government has made major improvements before signing it.

"The copyright extension is gone, the matters to do with Pharmac and the pricing of pharmaceuticals have gone, there is still the abilities for foreign investors to take action against the New Zealand Government but in reduced circumstances."

The government will need National's support to ratify the deal, as the Greens don't support it.

That is the Government's reasoning for major education reforms, that will change the way students are taught from early childhood through to post-secondary school.

A three-year work programme has been announced, looking at everything from the Tomorrow Schools programme introduced in 1989, to NCEA, vocational education and the research aspirations of the tertiary sector.

Labour Party MP, Kris Faafoi told Mike Hosking it will also look at school property.

"If you look around most areas of the country, some of the schools that we inherited were in pretty bad shape because of a rather large underinvestment by the previous government."
