Voter turn-out has been much better than expected in Australia's plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

More than 10 million people cast a vote, before closing time yesterday.

Almost 79-percent of eligible Australian voters have had their say in the poll, which is expected to show a slim majority want marriage laws changed.

Australian correspondent Steve Price says that's a very high turn-out for a non-binding poll.

"It's bigger than the numbers of people who turned out in a non-voluntary vote in Brexit, or the US election. The only problem is of course, is it means nothing."

There may be changes to the Reserve Bank Act, but don't expect them to shake things up too much.

Former Reserve Bank economist, Michael Reddell, believes appointing a decision-making committee is unlikely to change the decisions of the Reserve Bank.

At the moment the central bank's interest rate decisions are made solely by the Governor.

Mr Reddell said installing a committee would put us in line with Australia and the United States.

"Past research shows that on average the Reserve Bank of New Zealand has run monetary policy in much the same way as the central banks."

It's being suggested National's show of power in Parliament yesterday will have a huge effect on the next three years.

Some quick-fire negotiating on the floor of the House, saw Labour concede more select committee positions to National, in return for a unanimous vote to select Speaker Trevor Mallard.

Former United Future Leader, Peter Dunne told Mike Hosking National will be celebrating more than just embarrassing the Labour-led government.

"It's won the point on the select committees, which now means there will be more National MPs on select committees. They will be more difficult to control in terms of getting government legislation through. So it's won sort of the first skirmish but it's also laid down the path for winning the war."

Queenstown's clamping down on Airbnb, as affordable living in the city is sucked up by the tourism rental service.

Under rules the Queenstown Lakes District Council is voting on today, homeowners will have a short-term rental cap of 28 days a year.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa chief executive Chris Roberts said short term rentals are draining housing for tourism workers.

"People have purchased houses in the suburbs of Queenstown with no intention of ever living there themselves.

"They're running them full-time as a business, renting out to visitors, essentially as a hotel."

Children's serious dental health problems are sucking millions from the health system.

The number of kids admitted to hospital for dental treatment has jumped from 4500 to 7500 every year, over the past 15 years.

Paediatric dentist Katie Ayers told Mike Hosking some of the processes are lengthy and expensive.

"I know in my...area where we have five District Health Boards, it's a cost of around $3 million a year. So it's definitely money that could be valuably spent on something else."

The Queen's offshore investments in tax havens are being downplayed in Britain.

A major investigation into offshore trusts and tax havens, dubbed the Paradise Papers, shows the Queen has millions of pounds invested in the Cayman Islands.

UK correspondent, Rod Liddle, said people realise the Queen's investments are hands-off, and she probably has no idea where the money is.

He told Mike Hosking revelations Bono was implicated in similar things was more of a scandal.

"I think the reaction to Bono is worse than the reaction the Queen ... the Queen sort of gets a free pass."

Parisian workers are blocking traffic over the decision to cancel this year's Christmas market.

Protesters caused up to 10 kilometres of traffic to back up on highways into the city-centre of the French capital.

France correspondent Catherine Field said it comes after the city's mayor put an end to the traditional Champs-Elysées market.

"She said that there's too much of this 'stuff', she called it, being sold there is just tat - it's made abroad, it's brought in cheap and the tourists don't really like it."
