Over the last few episodes I've been exploring the Five Pillars of Abuse.
The different areas of our lives that are targeted, weakened and often systematically dismantled through emotional abuse, coercive control and manipulation.
This week we're exploring the Emotional Pillar.
Emotional abuse rarely begins with obvious cruelty. It often starts with attention, connection and the feeling that you've finally met someone who truly understands you.
But beneath the surface something else may be happening.
In this episode I explore:
• The Emotional Pillar and why it matters
• The cycle of idealisation, devaluation and discard
• How trauma bonds are formed
• Why emotional abuse is often so difficult to recognise
• The creation of the perfect persona
• How boundaries are gradually moved
• Why survivors often blame themselves
• What rebuilding looks like when the pillar has been damaged
One of the most difficult parts of healing is recognising that what felt like safety was often part of the trap.
Healing begins when we stop trying to understand who they were and start remembering who we are.
