  • How To Control Your Mindset So You Can Control Your Destiny With Jevon Wooden
“If he just had this one family, and that was us, he’d be able to make sure we were in a better house, right? Our house wouldn’t be falling apart. Our lights wouldn’t be turning off, right? Because we were still in the hood, you know, still living a very, very poor existence, right? So I’m like, why are we still doing this?”
In this episode, I have Jevon Wooden, who grew up in a different type of household from most Americans, and how his early life led him to prison, which is where everything changed.
    What to listen for:
What it was like growing up in a polygamist household and how that shaped the way Jevon looked at love
The image of the SWAT team stopping him at a gas station only to be after his father
“Something interesting about me: I grew up in a polygamous household”
Listen as he explains his stepfather having two different families across town from each other and how, though they both knew about each other, they never knew each other
What it was like to see his mom “settle” and how this all shaped the way he perceived love
Jevon tells of how confusing this was for his “Christian” friends in school and how it made him think differently from an early age
“I remember looking under my car at him, and all he could do was look away”
Jevon didn’t have a relationship with his biological father, and when he did, it got really messy
The life lessons he learned from watching his “Dad” hide from the cops
How an example of a “man” was not accurately portrayed to Jevon and how he needed to figure this out on his own
“But one of the guys that was there who worked in another department, he was moonlighting, but he was actually an army recruiter. Right, so he’s like, man, you should come down to the recruiter station”
Going from zero to hero was a part of the plan, but it took Jevon some time to get there
Listen as Jevon talks about how he was so lost in life and how the Army gave him a second chance
The path toward discipline was a long and hard road, but the path after wasn’t always sunshines and rainbows either

“When we embrace those feelings, we can then start to move through them instead of just taking those feelings and boxing them away for good.”
    Episode summary:
In this episode, Nick gets into the emotions that we go through and how sometimes we can stop them from actually coming out into the world. Sometimes, it’s a good thing to do; sometimes, it’s really not. And really, when we embrace our feelings, and we don’t shove them deep inside of us, we can actually do something with them.
    What to listen for:
The protocol I’ve figured out that works best for me to embrace my feelings and use them instead of being used by them
How our emotions are actually positive, not negative
Ways we can best interact with our emotions and how to embrace them
How to interact with your emotions in a split second
“There have even been certain times where I thought, I don’t know if I can actually control my emotions. I don’t know if I can do anything with them. They’re just gonna do something with me, and I don’t wanna go for that ride.”
A lot of us struggle with handling our emotions, let alone embracing them
The crazy-making thoughts of not knowing what will happen if my emotions take over
Our challenge to you to recall a time of growth and realization of your growth and what we can learn from those experiences.
“For most of us that have a hard time just moving along without actually doing something with the emotion or with the feeling that is controlled, then that’s where we need to actually spend our time.”
In most situations, the hardest step is the first one, I share how you can easily take that step
It can be easy to push or hide our emotions, and it’s literally in that decisive moment we can grow
Challenging ourselves to embrace what we’re feeling and thinking and how to do this in tiny moments
What “muscle” is used and how to grow it in simple ways for maximum growth
“You have two options when the emotion starts to well up. I put it in a box and push it away or do something with it.”
When presented with an emotional situation, we have two options in that moment
How we can take a quick breath in a moment and process through our emotions in real time
When we realize the options we have, we can consciously make a decision

  • Understanding Your Enneagram Type To Better Your Relationships With Myrna Scales
“The Enneagram is kind of looking at ways that we coped with stress and different circumstances as children, and so as a child when you’re going through something times we bring that coping mechanism into adulthood and the ways that we’re doing things, you know, doesn’t always work for our relationships or our professional life.”
In this episode, Nick speaks with Myrna Scales about the Enneagram and how understanding our personality type not only helps us understand ourselves better but can help us understand the people around us and can ultimately better our relationships.

The difference between each enneagram type and how we naturally are in our personality type
Myrna walks us through each type and how each thinks/feels
How the enneagram can help us better understand ourselves and ultimately better our relationships
“When you find your type, you can look at it and see where you can go when you’re in growth, where you go when you’re stressed out and unhealthy. You can look at different wings to see, you know because we’re complex people. You can’t just put one number on it.”
Myrna breaks down the various enneagram types and their correlating number
How to figure out which type you mostly resonate with
Understanding the various types to better understand ourselves and our relationship with others
How do we integrate or disintegrate into another personality type when stressed or triggered
“I had my youngest son in 2018, and he was three months old. One day, I was playing with him and found a lump on his belly. We brought him to the doctor, and they said, oh, it’s a mass. You need to go to the hospital right now to get further tests to see what else they find. Later, we found out he had a kidney tumor. And the tumor was so big, it covered that left kidney.”

  • Give Yourself The Freedom To Evolve With Anthony A. Dicks, Jr.

“When you’re being asked to be something that you’ve never been before, and you’re being held accountable for how well you are, that thing that you are being called to be, that you’ve never been before, it’s almost like a catch-22. I don’t know how to do this well, but I’m gonna be held accountable if I don’t do it well. And wrestling through that and trying to figure out, well, how do I position myself to do this well?”

    Episode summary:

In this episode, I speak with Anthony A. Dicks, Jr., who runs a management consulting company for nonprofits and leaders in various businesses. We talk about faith, purpose, our callings, and how we must give ourselves the freedom to evolve.

    What to listen for:

    • How faith and our purpose can often line up
  • We can run from our true calling if we want, but how it’ll catch up with us anyhow
  • Understanding the power of “why” and disregarding when and how it shows itself
  • Showing yourself grace, love, and the freedom to evolve
  • “Jesus almost made me flunk out of college”

    • Learn about the time Jesus stepped into Anthony’s life and turned him upside down
  • Our purpose and calling in life doesn’t always show up at the most “convenient times”
  • Our early 20s is a time of embracing some freedom, taking some risks, and, for some, being called to a much higher purpose in life
  • Listen in as Anthony talks about how he grew up with a pastor for a dad and never thought he’d “follow” in his footsteps
  • It’s on us whether or not we listen to the call of our purpose in life. It’s up to you if you answer that call or just hit the ignore button
  • “There’s a time when a child learning how to walk has to learn how to walk consciously. They have to force themselves to put one foot in front of the other. And then, you know, after stumbling or falling and all the rest of that stuff, they eventually. They walk, and then it becomes subconscious and not necessarily conscious. This is the challenge about learning how to become something when you’re of age.”

    • Life is full of learning lessons, it’s up to us to learn those lessons and keep at the struggle
  • Though we’re not always celebrated by others, like we were as a baby, we can still muster up the courage, strength, and stamina to see things through
  • How important it is to a lot of people that knowing “why” they’re doing something can dramatically change the way they, and we, handle the situation
  • Hindsight and perspective taught Anthony a lot about himself and his father and how he can be a great parent, spouse, and leader
  • “You just have to have the courage to keep doing the what until you figure out the why.”

    • The reason or the “why” for life isn’t always, or even most often, answered early
  • Courage to keep going isn’t a superpower; it’s within all of us
  • How Anthony heard his calling, listened, and started walking with faith toward it. Even though he wasn’t sure of the “why”
  • About Anthony A. Dicks, Jr.

Anthony is a leader’s leader! His passion for leadership development is seen through his work with emerging nonprofit leaders. He has spent over two decades preparing people with diverse responsibilities to reach their optimal leadership potential. • How Sobriety Helped Me See My Alcohol Addiction In A New Light With Nick McGowan

“It took me a long time to actually realize that there was a problem with my drinking, but that my problems were actually deeper than my drinking.”

    Episode summary:

In this episode, I share about my struggle with alcoholism and how I told myself for years, “I don’t have a problem,” only to realize that, yes, I did have a problem, but the problem was much deeper and darker than just alcoholism

    What to listen for:

    • Alcohol and other substances, as well as hobbies and most things, can become an addiction and/or a crutch if we’re not careful
  • How understanding our triggers can help us see what is hurting, as well as the ways we look to numb ourselves
  • How I thought alcoholism was “normal” based on my upbringing, can you relate?
  • How I became aware of my addiction, faced it, and got through my first year of sobriety
  • “I have some friends, some family members that have fought through and dealt with their alcoholism, amongst other addictions, and they’ve successfully gotten through it. But it’s not something that they just stopped working on.”

    • Alcoholism runs in our family, and based on our family history and system, it can be difficult to see as well as do something about
  • What I realized after a year of not drinking and how that relates to my past, present, and future
  • What stood out to me when I recalled all the memories lost and all the ways I used alcohol to either numb, kill, or hide my emotions and feelings
  • “I’m not gonna try to talk you into becoming sober and not drinking. I’m not gonna shame you for the drinking that you continue to do or any addictions that you have or anything at all. Just like anything in life, you can do whatever you want.”

    • How shame led to my alcoholism, amongst other things
  • We have the right to decide whatever we want, but we don’t always have the sage wisdom we crave and/or need until much later in life
  • How self-awareness led to an understanding of alcohol not being my problem but the repressed memories and traumas led to my alcoholism
  • Being aware of a problem doesn’t actually solve the problem, and being aware of our triggers doesn’t actually help us heal from the root problems
  • “Any sort of addiction, I get that it’s a disease, but there are reasons why we try to get away from something or reasons why we try to drown something or kill it or not feel something.”

    • Addictions can look cute and innocent at times, it takes discernment and self-awareness to be honest with ourselves
  • I share how growing up around negativity and pain led most of the adults to drink and be abusive; this doesn’t make it acceptable or “normal,” but on the surface, it can feel that way when it’s all we know
  • It takes a lot of inner strength to call ourselves out, and sometimes we can’t do it alone, BUT we do need to be open and willing to change if the circumstances call for it
  • “Being able to understand that it took me going through a divorce and going through job loss and business failure and almost suicide and a number of other things to be able to get to the point where I went, oh shit, the alcohol didn’t actually help me. It’s not something that benefited me or helped me get through or manage it differently. It actually made it worse.”

    • Sometimes major life changes affect us in a positive way; other times they affect us negatively, and it’s not all about “mind setting” your way through it; it takes realization and work to heal the trauma
  • Becoming honest with ourselves is an ongoing process, but no matter where you are, you can start over right now, in this moment
  • How I understand that I’m not here to blame alcohol or my parents but that I can only be accountable to myself for my life and the way I live
  • You’re not alone in your addiction; however, you may be alone in your head unless you open up about it all
  • Resources:

    • Check out Episode #70 with Sean Robinson, where we talk about his journey and struggle with alcoholism and social pressure

  • How To Not Rush Through The Trauma Storm With David Kitchens

“I have to do it because it makes me better, because it makes me feel better, because it makes me a better human, because it makes me a better businessman, because it makes me a better brother, a better son, a better friend, a better, all these things. Right? So you have to just look at it and say, okay, this is gonna be uncomfortable, but I’m so committed to this version of myself that I’m gonna be on the other side of this that I’m just gonna go through it.”

    Episode summary:

In this episode, David “Kitch” Kitchens and I talk about sports psychology, building leaders, and his view of the world from the standpoint of someone who was a bi-racial football player in a small town and how that shaped his life.

    What to listen for:

    • The importance of doing the hard work on yourself
  • Learning how to manage our stress and understanding what we’ve made up and what has come at us
  • We discuss privilege, race, and the perception of people in and outside of the USA
  • How growing up without knowing your father can shape you… for the rest of your life
  • “No matter where you go, people are people. But you also realize how superficial and how surface level a lot of the United States culture is and how we are not the center of the world”

    • Learn about how Kitch’s 6 month College Euro Trip changed his life
  • The perspective of seeing the world from outside our country can change the way we view our country ourselves and learn how other cultures live and view us as well
  • We both feel it’s very important for everyone to get out of their hometown and live somewhere else, even if it is on a school or business trip
  • Hear the story about how Kitch told the CEO of a European company that he should not bring his brand to the US… it ended up being like a movie ending!
  • “Being somebody that’s biracial and somebody that grew up African-American in a predominantly white area, it just furthered my ability to be kind of a social chameleon and be able to meet people of different creeds and all walks of life. And I think if I didn’t have those experiences, I wouldn’t be who I was as a coach, and I wouldn’t be who I am now as a business owner.”

    • Growing up in a small town where life is all about a sport can still be tough for a biracial child; however, there’s privilege that comes with being a football player
  • How growing up in a predominantly white area in a white town, he was never hidden from his African-American culture, and this shaped him as a boy and, ultimately, as a man
  • David knew he was different but always wanted to fit in while still forging his own path and identity
  • His understanding of being different led him into coaching and wanting to help people feel unique yet still included

  • Life Doesn’t Stop When Your World Is Falling Apart With Dr. Dravon James

“My passion is that I want to help people on a level beyond what they can physically touch. Like to get them to connect to themselves, their true self within.”

    Episode summary:

In today’s episode, I have a doctor, actress, mother, and founder of the Next Step Leadership Academy to discuss life transformation.

    What to listen for:

    • How to engage and call out our true selves in all aspects of life
  • What it’s like to be an actress, Dr, and parent, and how Dr. Dravon manages her life and mindset
  • How we can’t do anything of value in our lives without self-love, and how to attain that
  • “If you’ve ever sat down and you’ve been engrossed in some creative art, whatever it is for you, you realize that you sort of separate. And you go into this part of yourself that is your real true self where, you know, all of your fears and, you know, people pleasing, whatever it is for you, sort of take a backseat for a moment.”

    • How self-awareness is crucial in understanding why and how we do things in life
  • Understanding and learning how to separate ourselves from our true selves and our fears, pressures, etc…
  • Being able to love and understand ourselves is critical in being able to see past our current circumstances and into the why behind them
  • How our awareness of ourselves and our relationships can blind us or catapult us
  • “The ego sets us up to think that, oh, this will be the end of you. If you look this dead in the eye, it’s gonna be like Medusa; it’s gonna turn you to stone, it’s gonna kill you, and it will not.”

    • Learn the ways that Dr. Dravon speaks to herself and can handle tough situations as an actress and a doctor.
  • The importance of loving ourselves even in the midst of chaos and how important the words are that we speak to ourselves
  • Even when life is tough, and it’s hard to look at ourselves due to our mistakes, we must first have a love for ourselves before we can move forward
  • “Your mind is like a hammer going rogue. It’ll either build a house or bust a window, so you gotta give it direction.”

    • Learn how the words we speak to ourselves add or remove direction from that hammer
  • How the power of meaningful mantras can change the thoughts in our heads and, ultimately, how we relate to ourselves and the world around us
  • How to stay in a calm state of mind through gratitude and learn the practice Dr. Dravon uses each day to do this

  • The Magical Journey of Discipline and Curiosity With Wayne Faulkner
“Joy only comes from within ourselves. It is not external. It’s not an external act, external job. It’s an inside job.”
    Episode summary:
In this episode, Nick speaks with Wayne Faulkner, the author of 3 personal development books, to discuss the magical journey of discipline and curiosity. We travel through childhood into adulthood, career, being a musician, and going through heartbreak to discuss how we can manage our mindset and become stronger, clearer, and more on fire for life.
    What to listen for:
How our mindset plays a role in every aspect of our lives
What we feel music does to our soul, psyche, and daily living
How writing, like journaling, lyric writing, etc.. can help us process our lives and live more fulfilling lives
We discuss the uphill feeling of writing a book and how we change as a person through the process.
“The main obstacle, I think, in my view, that prevents people from writing is they don’t think that they can do it. Number one, yeah, they just don’t believe they can do it because when you look at a book, it has X number of pages. Wow, how would I ever be able to write a complete book of 150, 200, or 300 pages? Where is this information, where is the content gonna come from? How is this done? You know, I can’t do that, it’s impossible. But it is possible.”
Like most things in life, it’s not easy to start a massive project if we’re controlled by fear around it
The daily disciplines Wayne used to write each of his books that we can all use some variation of in our own lives
Projects like books are similar to how we see celebrities… it’s not an overnight success that makes them
“Progress over perfection. You know, as long as you’re making progress, that’s what it’s all about.”
How we view “success” in western culture
We discuss the difference between progress and perfection and why it matters to our daily lives
What happens when we let go of the outcome of our work
Breaking down the daily disciplines that help write a book, start a company, or even just run a healthy life
“In daily life, you will experience whatever the inner you projects. Whatever is inside of you, you will project that into your outside reality. So think for sure. Do I want to think positive? Do I want to feel positive? I want to feel joy, happiness, success, hope, awareness, inspiration, motivation? Or do you want the opposite?”
Our minds and attitudes can make or break us in almost every situation
How thinking and feeling are tied together and what that means for us
Simple ways Wayne has found to control his mind and daily life
How important speaking with love and listening with love are important not just in outward communication but also within ourselves.
