Sherry is a passionate believer and evangelist. Her heart is to follow the Great Commission and share Christ with those who are struggling. Sherry's work includes teaching in a seminary and volunteering at various organizations, including Miracle Hill Ministries.
This episode of Miracles from the Hill Podcast is focused on education. Sherry and Ryan discuss their thoughts on engaging with a community of people who are often neglected in Christian circles: those experiencing addiction and/or homelessness.
Afterall, the Great Commission is still great.
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

On this episode, Ryan is joined by Dennis, long-time mentor and volunteer at Miracle Hill's Overcomers Center. Mentorship is an important part of recovering from a life of dominating addiction and substance abuse. Dennis has walked with many men throughout the years, and has walked away personally encouraged. Mentorship is a type of community, and COMMUNITY is a human need.
Have you ever wondered how to be mentor (maybe in your church, with a friend, or formally through a program)? Or wondered if you are even a good fit for this task? This episode of Miracles from the Hill Podcast could be a great resource for you. We hope that you'll be encouraged through this conversation to step out and have relationships. Mentorship doesn't have to be a daunting task. Mentorship can simply be life on life, regular interaction that incorporates genuine conversation and two or more people who are passionate about each other's growth and vitality.
"Iron sharpens iron,
So one man sharpens another."
Provers 27:17

Lauren is active in the community, a wife, a mom, and an overall passionate individual. She is successful in her career and working to help those experiencing homelessness around her. Then everything changed in her world when her body stopped functioning like it used to.
Lauren and Ryan's conversation is real and raw. When Lauren's body began exhibiting unusual symptoms, a tsunami of questions, doubt, fear, and panic ensued. Yet, God is faithful. Lauren's story reminds us that those who follow Jesus have the gentle leading of a kind Shepherd, even through difficult life circumstances outside of our control.

Bob's childhood was turbulent, to say the least. As a little child, Bob remembers stealing food from a neighbor's tree just to have something to eat. Eventually, Bob was placed in a group home, where he finished out high school.
During his time at the group home, Bob met the Father of the fatherless and found true belonging.
Eventually, God led Bob to serve in various roles at Miracle Hill Ministries. And one day, Bob found himself director of Miracle Hill's Boy's Shelter. Now, Bob's past was an ministry of understanding to struggling boys.
Even with a childhood full of trauma, Bob dedicated his life to helping children who were just like him: homeless. Bob's story is inspiring and shares hope that, no matter our past circumstances, God can brin healing that surpasses the imaginable.
“He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing.” Deuteronomy 10:18

Somehow, Roy managed to make good grades in college, play football, and keep his dirty secret hidden: drug addiction. Eventually though, the truth comes out. We can't hide forever.
Not having a father in his life caused Roy to wander and find friendship in the wrong crowds. When partying and abusing substances started threatening his life in real ways, Roy had a choice to make.
Roy's story, in a way, feels like a novel; with its twists and turns, highs and lows, it's truly a miracle that Roy is working in Greenville Rescue Mission, spending his time loving and caring for people experiencing homelessness while sharing the love he found in Christ Jesus.
Topics: father wound, substance abuse, drug dealing, partying, prison, recovery, Christianity, Miracle Hill Ministries, Greenville Rescue Mission, hope.
"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come." 2 Corinthians 5:17

A definition of the word "success" by Mariam Webster is a "favorable or desired outcome." So what is the favorable of desirable outcome for guests of Miracle Hill Ministries who are experiencing homelessness or addiction or both? Success is hard to define in the context of complex human beings.
In this episode, Jeremy and Ryan talk about the idea of success. Jeremy is the director of Miracle Hill's largest emergency shelter facility: Greenville Rescue Mission. We celebrate the stories of those who find healing and wholeness after walking out our doors. But how do we process the stories of individuals who walk out of our care and choose to continue in addiction or a homeless lifestyle? Or how do we think about the story of the person who relapses one time and dies from an overdose?
This episode is a conversation exploring the idea of success.
"I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work." 1 Corinthians 3:6-8

Vulnerability is necessary.
Yet, many of us weren't taught how to actually practice vulnerability. And maybe you, like many people, feel stuck in a place where you want to be vulnerable, but you don't know how to begin a practice of vulnerability.
For Sharon, learning to sit with her feelings was the heart work that opened the door to vulnerability.
For years, Sharon wrestled with understanding her own emotions, and she never felt able to share her deepest thoughts and struggles with anyone else. Sharon had unmet needs, stuffed down inside.
These unmet needs led her down a path of substance abuse. But drugs isn't the end of her story...
This episode covers the ups and downs of Sharon's earlier life and reminds us of the need we all have to understand who we are on the deepest levels.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

In this second-part episode, Reid and Ryan continue a conversation centered around Reid's experiences at Miracle Hill Ministries. When an organization changes, there are often many bumps and learning opportunities ahead. Ministry is hard work and, contrary to occasional outward appearance, not everyone working in "ministry" feels ready or able to do the task at hand.
For all who are sick, there is healing. For all who are unable, there is power. For all who are unwise, there is wisdom.
"Wisdom cries aloud in the street,
in the markets she raises her voice;
at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
“How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?
How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing
and fools hate knowledge?
If you turn at my reproof,
behold, I will pour out my spirit to you;
I will make my words known to you.
Proverbs 1:20-23, ESV

We all have history - history with our family, history with ourselves, and history with God. In this episode, Ryan and Reid Lehman, former Miracle Hill CEO, discuss the fascinating and complex history of Miracle Hill Ministries. Reid grew up at the Ministry - roaming the farm and playing with the other children who lived at Miracle Hill's Children's Home. Once he grew up, Reid married and pursued working in ministry. But life didn't go as expected...
This is a walk down memory lane. Remembering history is healthy and listening to these stories will encourage you. Maybe today you need reminding that God is faithful.
1 Thessalonians 5:24: "The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it."

Young managed his use of illegal substances, until his addiction managed him. And then tragedy. On this episode of Miracles from the Hill Podcast, Ryan and Young tell a powerful story of abuse, pain, grief, and healing. If you need to be reminded that your life is never out of God's reach, listen to Young's Story. The second part of this podcast is a conversation centered around "recovery." What does it look like to walk in freedom from a drug addiction? Is someone always in recovery? Is recovery even a good way of describing this "after" stage?
If you'd like to deepen your education on addiction-recovery, then this episode is for you!
