Hello Season 6! Samantha is a therapist based on LA, who now focuses on misophonia. She doesn’t actually have miso, but her husband does, and so do both of her kids. So she has had to learn quickly and she basically lives with miso 24/7 in her personal life and professional life. We get to hear all about the miso origin stories of her family members, when and why she decided to go all in on miso after having a successful career in more traditional therapy, and of course I talk to Samantha about her approach to helping people of all ages manage their misophonia, and her thoughts on the whole landscape of therapy for miso. Season 5 Finale! Starting next week I’ll the kicking off season 6 with fresh new conversations. This was a special interview though that I’m specifically releasing for the finale because I got to catch up with an old friend and co-worker. Colin was actually a mentor of mine almost exactly 13 years ago when I started a new job in a new career. I was actually also new to learning about misophonia. Little did I know we’d be talking on a podcast 13 years later sharing our misophonia stories with what we now know is a large community around the world. We talk about being a father and husband with misophonia, how he found this podcast and reconnected with me, being an only child with miso, and a lot about navigating through work life. We also go on some slight tangents which just makes for a perfect season finale pod.

Today I talk to Tania, who is a translator based in Helsinki, Finland, but grew up in Barcelona. This is the first time Tania has talked to anyone else who has misophonia. She was not in a sympathetic home and is mocked and shamed to this day by her parents. We talk about those experiences, life in different countries, living with her partner now, and the message she has for parents that have children with misophonia. Short but powerful episode. Enjoy!

Allison lives in Tacoma Washington and works for as a biologist for a science agency there. Allison has misophonia and a number of her family members also have it, some in denial, but it’s all over her family. We talk about the dynamics there, what family events are like, what it was like growing up before any of them knew this was a thing, and then we also talk about her workplace and being nudged back into the office. Leanne put her money where her mouth is and bought a large 6 acre property in rural North Carolina where she could be away from her misophonia triggers. We talk about all her challenges that finally led her to buy some isolation, we talk a lot about the challenges she has had at work as a nurse. She has had to deal with a surprising amount of pushback, mockery, and gaslighting for her misophonia, sometimes from the most unlikely places. Through it all though Leanne has always taken the high ground (I know many of us would probably have blown a fuse much earlier!) and so I think it’s important to hear how she thinks about the awareness and acceptance void that we face in the world.

Assal works in engineering at Uber in Seattle but has an unusual background. She is the first person I’ve interviewed who has been detained in another country due to geopolitical tensions when she was stuck in Iran for a few years. She was actually born there and grew up in the Middle East, and we talk about life with misophonia in that part of the world. We talk about tea delivery boys, punching a boyfriend, and weird suggestions by therapists. Despite the things about being a prisoner in another country for years, this was one of the funniest interviews I’ve had so far.
