Jennifer just found out about the podcast after going through what she describes as a “misophonia episode” in January. It got her to seek help in many places and she is now fortunately in a much better place. We talked about the effect of the pandemic on us, a year into it. We also go back deep into her past and her experiences as a child in a pretty chaotic family life and how she hid in her room a lot. Emergency pod! This is a special episode with Mercede Erfanian, one of the co-authors of the very recent paper, "The motor basis for misophonia", led by Dr. Sukhbinder Kumar. Mercede has been studying the neuroscience of misophonia for years and has many projects in the works to hopefully lead to developing more therapies. We talk all about the most recent results of her work and others researching the neuroscience behind misophonia in a way that is very approachable for non-scientists. Dr. Jane Gregory is a clinical psychologist and misophonia researcher at Oxford University... she also has misophonia herself! Find her on the web and social media at the links below. In 2011, the New York Times published an article that would change the course of misophonia's history and catapult it into wider awareness. It's an article that comes up a lot in my conversations because it's often the first article that made people feel really validated. And they felt that they could share it with others and point to it as something that is being taken seriously by a place like the New York Times. I was able to catch up with the author, Joyce Cohen, 10 years later and reflect on that time, going on the Today show, how she ended up using the term misophonia, and more... 
 
Couple of notes: the sound quality is not the best because I was recording a live phone call from a regular microphone.
Also, a warning that the topic of suicide comes up because one of her other articles does deal with a tragedy involving someone taking their own life.
