Psalm 8 is a very humbling Psalm. It's a Psalm of scope and perspective. When you consider the scope of the universe, it's easy to feel small, and maybe even insignificant.

And the truth is, in a purely materialistic world, we ARE insignificant.

But the truth of scripture is that this universe is not all there is. This universe was created by an all powerful God who loves you!

When you consider the scope of that, what is man that God is mindful of us?

Davis McCurley, lead elder at Mission Hill, retired pastor, son of Bill McCurley, grandfather of Joschua and Lorelei McCurley, and a dear friend of mine spent time unpacking this incredible Psalm at youth group last night!

Have you ever been threatened? Or maybe warned about something? What was your response? It probably depended on whether or not you thought the person making the threat could deliver on it. But in that case, what did you do?

Did you heed the warning? Did you follow through? Why or why not?

Threats can be really powerful. They help to wake us up to the reality of the situation. They sober us up and get us thinking about our life choices because, suddenly, danger is around the corner. Danger that could be avoided if we listen to the warning and make the right choice.

Psalm 2 is a surprisingly threatening Psalm. I've read it hundreds of times, but it wasn't until I sat down and actually started studying it for this lesson that I realized it carries a sobering warning.

What is that warning? Well, you'll just have to listen and find out!

How did you fill it in? Maybe you put "has a ton of money", or "has thousands of followers on instagram", or "works really hard and earns everything he has", or "gets up at 3 am to start his day."

Maybe it was something completely different! The point is, we all have our own understanding of what it means to be "blessed".

But what does it actually mean to be "blessed"? What is the Bible's understanding of what it means to be blessed?

I would bet money that, if you took a poll of Christians all over the world, and asked them to list their top five favorite books of the Bibles, the Psalms would be the one book that populated all those lists.

And that makes sense! Christians have been turning to the Psalms for thousands of years. In this incredible book we find words of comfort, words of anger, words of sorrow, and words of praise that just speak to our souls. It's no wonder that the Psalms are beloved by every believer over the course of Church history.

But what are the Psalms? Who wrote them? Why were they written? And why are they all poems?

We explored these questions at youth group! We are digging into the Psalms this year, and you know what that means? HISTORICAL BACKGROUND NIGHT!!!!

Dear listener, did you know that one of the most debated topics in Christianity is whether or not women can hold certain positions of leadership in the church? It is! Paul has some seemingly clear things to say about women in the family, women in the church, and it's caused quite an uproar over the course of church history.

At youth group last night, we tackled this question. Mind you, this topic alone could span months... and we only had 40 minutes! So we barely scratched the surface of this debate. Consider this episode, then, as the "dipping your toes in the water" episode when it comes to this issue. In the next 40 minutes, you'll hear what the debate even is, the two main camps that usually join the debate, and then finally, the question we are all wondering: "who is right?"

This question was actually a two-parter that I changed into a four-parter. The original two questions were, "Why was the Bible written?" and "Why do Catholics have a different Bible?" But I added two more questions: What is the Bible? And how was it created?

Yes, we crammed a seminary level course into 30 minutes. Why? Because not many people know how we got the Bible that we have!!! I remember when I was a kid that I didn't know how to answer people when they asked me, "Where did the Bible come from? And why do Catholics and protestants have different Bibles?"
