I had the honor to sit down with Jason Schechterle, retired Phoenix Police Department officer, homicide detective and burn survivor. Growing up in Phoenix in the early 2000s, I was familiar with Jason's story of survival starting with the rear-end collision on March 26th, 2001. Jason's patrol car was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling 115MPH. The car burst into flames and travelled nearly 300 feet, coming to rest in front of Phoenix Fire Department Engine Company No. 5. The firefighters aboard Engine 5 immediately went to work to extricate Jason with the assistance of two other PPD officers who arrived on-scene.
Jason was taken to the Maricopa County Burn Unit with burns to over 40% of his body. A team lead by Dr. Daniel Caruso began to work to save Jason.
With more than 50 surgeries between 2001 and 2008, Jason exhibited strength beyond measure. To this day, his story serves as a reminder of the capabilities of the human spirit, and the drive to never quit.
