Whenever we start a new skill there are often times of frustration and self doubt. We go through periods of anger and embarrassment as our capabilities fall short of our expectations.
This area of frustration is called The Gap.
It’s the distance between your competence and standard in any given skill.
Unfortunately for us, when we first start out with a new task or skill, our standards are much higher thant what we are capable of.
For example; You may have really good taste in music and be a great poet. However, if you were to pick up a guitar and sign something you wrote down, would it sound good?
Chances are it wouldn’t.
Now, as you learn the guitar and take countless hours of singing lessons, you’ll also continue to get frustrated if your song does not meet your standards.
It’s not that you’re a bad songwriter. It’s that your guitar playing skills and singing skills are just not where you want them to be yet. Because of this, many people quit.
Don’t let this happen to you!
Sure, we’re not all destined to be Rockstars or pop signers. However, you can increase your skills to a level worthy of compensation and acknowledgement.
It’s simply all about putting in the work and time to get better at your craft. Even and especially when your frustration is at it’s highest.
Trust me, we’ve all been there. This is a common for anyone trying something new.
Andrej and I sat down to discuss our challenges with The Gap and some tactics we use to push through and keep going. Because the only way to Bridge That Gap is to get to the other side.
Enjoy this episode of “No Rain… No Rainbows” and be sure to let us know how you bridge The Gap in the comments below!
